Description
The Assistant Department Manager is responsible for the supervision, training, and direction of substation engineers in the Atlanta T&D Substation Department. Along with the duties below, this position will continue to include technical Substation engineering assignments. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by substation department management and senior management:
Responsible for advocating for safety in the department.
Responsible for driving culture of quality and continual improvement.
Responsible for advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Providing overall leadership to the team through strong communication, empowerment, delegation and servant leadership.
Responsible for fostering a healthy and vibrant employee-owner culture within the team through the leverage of sound team-building practices, the promotion and administration of effective conflict resolution, the promotion of ownership mentality, a healthy work-life balance, and community engagement.
Recruit candidates that align with MacCulture principles, department needs, growth strategies and business objectives.
Advocate for staff by meeting regularly, listening to their short- and long-term goals and providing guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.
Build strong partnerships with Kansas City and other regional office teams, including the Burns & McDonnell International offices (India, London, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico.)
Reviewing and conducting employee performance (90-day and annual performance appraisals, coaching sessions, etc.) to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
Identify training needs for the department and support/develop training programs. Collaborate with other departments on shared training.
Assisting the Substation Business Line Management team to develop business initiatives to improve profitability and/or efficiencies.
Advancing and developing Department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
Responsible for collaborating with business development managers, Substation Business line manager, project managers, and proposal support staff on substation proposals to secure work for staff.
Interpreting policies, purposes, and goals of organization to staff.
Serve as the substation technical advisor, provide input and evaluation on substation design engineering projects.
Demonstrating creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
Determining departmental objectives and requirements, and developing standards and guidelines.
Assisting Substation Department Management by providing recommendations on changes in the basic structure and organization of the department to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to it.
Approving timecards and ensuring billable time goals are met.
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
Minimum 5 years related professional experience in high voltage substation engineering design.
2 years acting as a Substation Team Lead is preferred.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.
History of high performance as demonstrated and documented in the Burns & McDonnell performance management system.
Candidates must possess strong substation design skills and a strategic perspective.
Professional Engineering license preferred.
