Burns & McDonnell Public Involvement Specialist - Environmental Services (Baltimore) in Baltimore, Maryland


Burns & McDonnell is looking for a Public Involvement Specialist to provide clients with a comprehensive suite of communication and public outreach services for infrastructure projects in the Baltimore, MD, area and beyond.

This position works in conjunction with our clients and project managers to establish functional goals, communication strategies and tactics to help the Public Involvement team execute the Public Involvement/Community Relations plans and processes accordingly. This person will have access to industry-leading tools, technologies and training while working on high-profile projects.

This person will be responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with project stakeholders including client project managers, public officials, property owners and businesses affected by projects. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of communications and public involvement with excellent written and verbal skills. Candidates should be able to show working knowledge of interactions with the public related to construction or utility projects.

Typical project activities include material development and distribution (brochures, handouts, newsletters, mailers, web site content, and other materials to project audiences), public meetings, open house events, information sessions, special events.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or related field and experience working with the public.

  • 5 years of experience in these fields is preferred.

  • Must be able to manage and work well in a team environment

  • Excellent organizational skills, a proven ability to communicate professionally and interact effectively at all audience levels (i.e., public officials, property owners, businesses, client, construction contractors, etc.); have a flexible schedule and be willing to work evenings and/or weekends, as needed.

  • Experience in the electric utility industry is preferred, but not required.

  • Candidate must be willing to travel and have a valid drivers’ license and reliable transportation.

  • A working knowledge of construction or experience in construction-related activities is a plus
