Burns & McDonnell Senior Civil Engineer/Project Manager - Environmental Services (Multiple Locations) in Brea, California


Burns and McDonnell is seeking to hire a Senior Civil/Environmental Engineer or Project Manager to further develop our growing Infrastructure practice in California. The candidate will lead our delivery for sustainable engineering and design as well as support our design-build capability within the areas of habitat restoration, coastal/estuarine restoration, sustainability, energy and water conservation systems, solid waste, and other related projects.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Executes complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods.

  • Develop and evaluate plans for major projects and prepare construction documents.

  • May assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient, or testing is advisable.

  • May coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports or project design assignments.

  • Progressive design and project management responsibilities.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Regularly meets and corresponds with clients or outside personnel.

  • Some marketing and direct sales responsibilities will be required.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental or Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Environmental or Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering a plus.

  • 7 years environmental engineering experience. EPC project experience preferred.

  • Professional Engineering License (PE).

  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of environmental design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE). Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Experience putting together design packages.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.
