Burns & McDonnell Planning Engineer - Municipal Water / Systems (Multiple Locations) in Chicago, Illinois
The Planning Engineer will partner with engineering, field and administrative staff on a wide variety of water distribution, wastewater collection and stormwater planning projects. This position will work on various projects with a diverse portfolio of project types and clients.
Key competencies in this role include:
Develop and conduct hydraulic modeling activities for complex wastewater collection systems, water distribution systems, and stormwater conveyance systems using state-of-the-art software.
Develop flow and rainfall monitoring plans; analyze flow and rainfall data.
Coordinate and assess a variety of field investigations and field surveys.
Responsible for the verification and preparation of maps, illustrations, databases, and other various data sources relating to water resource systems using today's analytical software and visualization tools.
Assist with water distribution, wastewater collection and storm sewer system capital planning and project needs assessments.
Develop geographic information system (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS) maps and mobile applications to collect data.
Review, interact and support various assignments requiring use of asset management and other computer maintenance and management system (CMMS) software.
Maintain detailed and accurate project records.
Maintain task/project budgets and schedules.
Prepare technical memorandums and participate in internal and external technical presentations and proposals.
Support development of technical reports and make appropriate recommendations based on completed analyses.

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering may be substituted for 1-year experience.
3 years (5 years preferred) of civil engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Successful completion (i.e.passing) FE or EIT preferred.
Strong interest in planning related to water, wastewater and stormwater systems preferred
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
High level of attention to detail with ability to self-QC work.
Proficiency in database management and data analytics using today's innovative technologies.
Experience in the following software packages is preferred: InfoSewer, InfoSWMM, Sewer-GEMS, XP-SWMM, InfoWorks ICM, WaterCAD, SWMM 5, WaterGEMS, InfoWater, and EPANet.
Experience in hydraulic modeling required.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, SharePoint).
Proficient in ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro preferred.
