Burns & McDonnell Project Execution Manager - Substation in Chicago, Illinois

The Substation Project Execution Manager is responsible for the overall management and direction of Substation project delivery from the completion of the Q2 review through project closeout. Working with the Substation management team and the individual project managers, the project execution manager will ensure that projects are managed and executed in a manner that makes both our clients and Burns & McDonnell successful. This position is also responsible for the supervision, training, mentoring, and development of the Substation project management team. This position will be a Chicago, Downtown-based position.

Position Responsibilities:

Communication

  • Advocate for safety in the department.

  • Work with the Substation Business Line Manager and management team and to help define the overall business strategies to achieve goals and objectives.

  • Provide leadership to the project management team; direct and coordinate assignments and activities ensuring efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Coordinate project management staffing across regional offices, GPs and accounts, ensuring efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff.

Financial Performance

  • Conduct monthly project reviews to identify execution risks and review financial performance and resources.

  • Review proposals, financial deals, and present deal sheets and proposal summaries to management prior to signature. In addition, serve as capture manager for strategic business line and multi-discipline proposals for multiple clients.

  • Oversee the identification of Substation project and portfolio risks including the administration of the associated mitigation strategies to provide for a portfolio of work that meets or exceeds set goals.

  • Assist in the creation of the Substation annual business plan.

  • Direct the development of department tools and workflows to increase efficiency in designs, specification development, project execution and financial performance.

Team Development

  • Drive and support a positive culture of leadership, collaboration, and service to make our clients and Burns & McDonnell successful.

  • Mentor, develop and provide as needed training for current and aspiring project managers.

  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain outstanding employee-owners.

  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports and provide supporting information to other manager for evaluations of their staff as required. As required perform more frequent check-ins based on performance.

  • In coordination with T&D GP leadership, recruit internal and external candidates into PMIT and Project Management roles within CHI Substation.

  • Serve as a project management advisor to the CHI Substation team providing input on budgets, communication plans internal and external, schedules, change management, staff management, business development, as required.

  • Collaborate with project manager and department managers to meet staffing requirements and needs.

  • Provide senior-level engineering and project management expertise to guide project managers and project leads in executing engineering projects.

Execution

  • Establish effective policies and procedures that promote project success, including on-time delivery, client satisfaction, quality, and profitability.

  • Advise on the development of tools and workflows to increase efficiency in designs, specification development, project execution, and project management.

  • Lead effort to implement a culture of innovation and profitability in our substation teams.

Quality

  • Evaluate project and PMIT performance within the Substation group and perform root cause analysis on non-technical issues and financial under performance. Perform Substation project management lessons learned on when issues are identified. Work with the Substation operational managers develop actions plans to prevent reoccurrence of issues.

  • Ensure that project managers understand and follow the T&D Quality program for all projects.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Substation Business Line Manager.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related degree from an accredited program.

  • Licensed professional engineer or project management professional certification preferred.

  • Minimum seven (7) years of consulting experience, preferably in substation engineering design and/or project management, consulting, or program management.

  • Three (3) years of successful experience managing a portfolio of substation projects, developing proposals, performing profitability analyses, tracking financial performance, managing quality control, and developing strategies to respond to client requests for proposals or needs in a business and consulting role.

  • Strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Successful experience in project management including planning, design team coordination and communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.

  • Successful experience in proposal development.

  • Excellent facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent planning and analytical skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and able to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in project management including design team coordination, communication, budgeting, schedule management, resource management, safety, quality, and client coordination.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management methodologies and tools including the use of EcoSys, Microsoft Project, PowerBI, and other data modeling systems.

  • Demonstrated financial success on completed projects.

  • Demonstrated experience in contract negotiations.

  • Demonstrated experience in client and business development.
