Burns & McDonnell Assistant Department Manager- Design Technology Department- Ohio (AKR/CLM) in Columbus, Ohio

Description

This position is responsible for leadership, strategy and innovation of CAD technologies and workforce within the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice in our Ohio offices (both Akron and Columbus). The primary purpose of this position is to develop our Design Technology staff and to align our current and future technology vision with our business plans.

This role will be responsible for working with the T&D SLO/OH management in both an internal and external facing capacity. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties assigned by Design Technology Department management and senior management as needed:

Leadership

  • Lead a dynamic team that promotes ownership, engagement, and retainment of staff with a focus on creating an atmosphere/environment for all.

  • Drive a culture focused on safety.

  • Develop and foster an innovation culture that challenges the norm and utilizes tools, technology, and processes to drive continuous improvement and efficiency.

  • Support department and section managers in developing, maintaining, and communicating:

  • Processes, tools, and organizational structures that best supports the business needs and profitability goals of T&D across all business lines.

  • Recruitment and retainment strategies to maintain staff that are well positioned for utilizing current and future technologies to support profitable execution of projects.

  • Staff training programs, specifically for developing CAD staff into design focused roles.

  • Establish and communicate a vision for technology and staff that supports profitability growth within the changing business landscape and work with each department and section manager to develop short- and long-term goals in support of that vision.

  • Support client, project, and marketing teams in developing and presenting on Burns & McDonnell technology capabilities, benefits, and challenges in an internal and external facing capacity.

Personnel

  • Work with the HR Recruiting Team Recruiting to proactively recruit the best candidates to meet Department and organization goals.

  • Responsible for the onboarding process for those transitioning into Design Technology in our Ohio offices. This includes but is not limited to interns, new graduates, experienced hires, transfers and converted contract employees.

  • Continuously educate the Department about the various career paths offered within T&D, and work with employee owners to help them develop the knowledge, skills, abilities, and opportunities to pursue their desired career path.

  • Serve as a mentor and coach to all the employee owners you directly manage.

  • Identify training needs and support training programs in collaboration with the business line initiatives.

  • Organize, lead, and conduct the annual performance appraisal process for the employee owners you directly manage.

  • Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement.

Technology & Innovation

  • Establish and maintain a culture of innovation and challenge & inspire staff to think in innovative ways.

  • Use new and existing software to improve workflows for improved collaboration

  • Gain a knowledge of tools and process currently used and who uses similar tools and process

  • Work with project teams and Department managers to identify and implement new solutions to improve efficiency and quality of deliverables.

  • Attend and present at industry events to identify emerging industry trends and technologies.

  • Initiate and execute innovation initiatives to drive quality, efficiency, and profitability in our use of CAD technologies.

Technical/Execution/Production

  • Serve as the technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on CAD/Design Technology related items.

  • Monitor progress on Department related initiatives and providing input into areas of concern and direction/redirection to enhance achievement of quality, productivity, and budgets.

  • Advance and develop Department tools and workflows to increase Department efficiencies and quality. Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.

  • Developing CAD standards for 2D and 3D clients

  • Responsible for QA/QC on T&D projects as needed to support Department staff

  • Implementation of CAD file storage programs such as ProjectWise and Vault

Organizational

  • Coordinate work for the department including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Interpret policies, procedures, and goals of the organization to the Department.

  • Prepare and monitor department staff growth, billability, and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.

  • Assist in the development and execution of the T&D SLO/OH Business Plan.

  • Support overall Office development and resource coordination between GPs.

  • Support Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.

  • Support diversity and other office/GP initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree with 5 years related professional experience\*, an Associate’s degree with 7 years of professional experience* in detailing/design, or 10 years of professional experience* in CAD related fields. Other qualifications include:

  • Self-starter with proven experience in establishing vision, setting direction, and driving results.

  • Consistent above average performance in current and previous roles.

  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.

  • Proven experience in proactive collaboration and team building.

  • Candidates must possess strong CAD skills across multiple platforms and a strategic perspective.

  • Candidates must be proficient in the use of basic computer software (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Substation, AutoCAD Inventor).
