Burns & McDonnell’s Energy Global Practice is seeking to hire a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Energy division and Nuclear team focusing on Nuclear Power Plants, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Reactors, in our Columbus, OH office. Our Nuclear team has domestic and international experience providing services for large nuclear power plants, nuclear refurbishments, as well as SMRs and advanced reactors. We deliver solutions for these and other challenging projects every day.As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will serve as part of our design team with the ability to work on a full range of projects in engineering, procurement, and construction management related to the operation, maintenance, modification, and licensing of existing utility nuclear generating stations.

  • Lead mechanical design projects related to Nuclear facility design.

  • Develop cost opinions, work plans, and schedules, as well as conduct and coordinate work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.

  • Provide leadership guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.

  • Regularly meets and corresponds with clients or outside personnel.

  • Equipment sizing and application.

  • Hydraulic calculations and associated pump selection, sizing, and application.

  • Pipe and valve selection and sizing.

  • Pipe material selection including fittings, gaskets, etc.

  • Pipe supports and pipe routing.

  • P&ID’s

  • Mechanical Equipment Condition Assessment and Lifecycle cost analysis.

  • Plumbing (sanitary & potable water)

  • Pumping/piping any fluid or gas, including blowers, steam & compressed air.

  • Tank/vessel selection and sizing.

  • Selection and location of instrumentation associated with pumps, vessels, and tanks.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • The completion of a master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • 7 years related mechanical experience; EPC project experience preferred.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred.

  • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to a broad area of assignments.

  • Experience in the use of SmartPlant P&ID a plus.

  • Nuclear power or similar SMR experience is preferred.

  • Candidate must be capable of devising new approaches to solve complex problems.
