Burns & McDonnell Project Manager - Municipal Water / Wastewater (Denver) in Denver, Colorado

Description

Our Denver office is looking for highly driven and collaborative employee-owners with excellent client and team interaction skills and who can manage and lead design teams for a wide range of water and wastewater projects. In this position, you will help with the pursuit and management of water and energy projects. The ideal candidate possesses both the technical and interpersonal skills necessary to lead and mentor a team of project engineers. In this position, you must be a seller – doer and effectively collaborate within the existing business units to drive growth in a market that requires water to make energy and energy to make water in a sustainable manner.

Responsibilities:

  • The Project Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of work on assigned projects. This includes project safety, coordinating the design efforts of multi-discipline design teams, managing schedules and budgets, developing cost and technical proposals, contract negotiation, risk identification and management, client development, managing client expectations and overall client satisfaction.

  • Established in the industry as a subject-matter-expert in hydraulics and advanced treatment (ie; desalination) commonly needed in the power industry.

  • A knowledge of electricity generation for nuclear, natural gas, solar, biogas and hydroelectric.

  • A proven record in optimizing water/wastewater treatment process trains and the pumping units that drive the treatment process, including supply, distribution and well pumping.

  • Well-connected with water / wastewater utilities across the country with a focus in local markets in CO and AZ.

  • A mentor capable of passing technology transfer to his/her team and other practice leads, while also being open to suggestions from the team.

  • Leverage existing relationships with water / wastewater utilities, manufacturers, power companies and federal funding organizations to grow the water – energy practice. Identify opportunities and manage team efforts for submittals, proposals, presentations, contract negotiation, and related activities.

  • Experienced public speaker that can engage clients.

  • Ability to successfully manage complex projects and clients.

  • Experienced in successfully securing and executing electric utility demand-side rebate programs to leverage outside funding to pay for initial investment-grade engineering studies and subsequent energy efficiency measure implementation.

  • Had written articles, or research, in established, industry-accepted publications in areas he/she is considered a subject matter expert in.

  • Proficient in pre-positioning for projects, scope writing and project budgeting.

  • Lead and coordinate water and energy projects with sizes ranging from large-scale infrastructure to small-scale studies from concept to completion including overall safety, siting, environmental, permitting, planning, estimating, engineering, right-of-way acquisition, project controls, bid phase services, procurement, constructability reviews, material management, and closeout.

  • Work with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians on the design of water and energy projects and contractors and construction staff on design/build projects.

  • Understand and apply conventional and advanced treatment technologies to solve complex water quality challenges for clients in Colorado and the western states.

  • Mentor less experienced staff and serve as a leader.

  • Perform client management duties for existing clients; utilize business development skills to lead proposals, win new projects, and increase the existing client base. Serve as the primary point of contact with clients regarding efforts such as client coordination, strategic planning, master scope management, budget finances, subcontracting, project staffing, environmental compliance, facility support and schedule attainment.

  • Perform project management duties, including overall project planning, budgeting, and scheduling. Develop and monitor project schedules, manage scope, and control project costs.

  • Establish and meet critical project objectives and performance metrics. Manage internal project financials, providing detailed, accurate project cost forecasts and accruals to client(s) and Global Practice leadership.

  • Coordinate and communicate with the internal project team, client staff and stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.

  • Review and negotiate contracts.

  • Participate in and potentially lead internal and external project risk reviews. Consult with Legal Department as required.

  • Plan, organize and communicate project personnel needs to management, coordinate activities of multiple disciplines, and ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Provide performance feedback for project team members as appropriate.

  • Develop and implement project policies and procedures, establish project controls systems, and implement the project execution plan.

  • Work closely with the project team to ensure deliverables and services are being provided to the client’s satisfaction and that projects are following internal QA/QC guidelines.

  • Report regularly on progress, cost and schedule metrics, procurement issues, safety or environmental concerns, design questions, potential impacts, and any issues requiring additional support

  • Be visible in the regional water and wastewater marketplace through leadership and participation in professional organizations.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field from an accredited program.

  • Minimum of 7 years of related experience in design engineering, including three or more years managing engineering or architectural projects; preferably in the design and construction of water and/or wastewater treatment facilities, including experience managing a variety of water and/or wastewater projects with full responsibility for the budget, schedule, contractual obligations, client service, and quality standards.

  • Completion of a master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

  • Demonstrated success in project management.

  • A self-driven individual with a water or wastewater process and plant facilities background and the willingness to take on new challenges is preferred.

  • If drinking water focused background, ideal candidate has experience in conventional pretreatment and filtration, as well as membranes, hydraulics, chemical feed systems, alternate disinfection systems, and residuals handling preferred.

  • If wastewater-focused background, ideal candidate has experience in preliminary treatment, primary treatment, biological treatment (including BNR), disinfection, hydraulics, and solids processing and handling preferred.

  • Proven ability to develop business and establish relationships with clients.

  • Ability to deal effectively with various industry, government and public contracts on project-related matters is strongly preferred.

  • Candidate must be a team player and have excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Ability to influence, lead and manage change thoughtfully and positively.

  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

  • Strong experience with document control, scheduling, cost control and project management software.

  • Existing relationships with local and statewide municipal and private clients preferred.

  • Previous consulting and design-build experience preferred.

  • Active history in professional associations is preferred.

  • Professional engineer license or the ability to obtain within the first six (6) months is preferred.

Compensation Range

$148,000 - $265,000

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
