Burns & McDonnell Regional Global Practice Managing Director-1898 & Co. (Denver, CO) in Denver, Colorado


1898 & Co., a part of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking an energetic, accomplished Managing Director to lead the 1898 & Co. practice in the Denver, CO regional office. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success developing innovative solutions for clients in the consulting and technology spaces. The Managing Director is responsible for managing all 1898 & Co. market segments in the region; identifying, growing and maintaining key client accounts in the region; managing all 1898 & Co. staff in the Denver office and other locations reporting to Denver; identifying regional client opportunities and trends; working with business line leads across 1898 & Co. to develop go-to-market strategies for offerings; identifying new business opportunities; establishing and meeting sales and profitability targets; continuously improving existing offerings; and leading the pursuit process for major projects. This Denver-based position is responsible for the strategic development and overall leadership of the 1898 & Co. Global Practice in the Denver Regional office (DEN). Responsibilities include:

  • Manage all 1898 & Co. market segments in the region, including Utility Consulting; Technology Consulting; Oil, Gas & Chemical Consulting; Management Consulting; and Security & Risk Consulting.

  • Grow the practice in a dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell and 1898 & Co. core values of client satisfaction, entrepreneurship, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service.

  • Maintain Burns & McDonnell Safety program standards.

  • In conjunction with the DEN Office General Manager and 1898 & Co. General Manager:

  • Develop and execute a long-term strategic plan

Identify, develop and direct the implementation of business strategies for the practice, including operational strategies and procedures, marketing strategies and pricing strategies, and business development and client retention strategies. Must be able to maximize profit on projects with remarkable success for our clients. Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

Recruit, hire, develop and retain staff; mentor staff for 1898 & Co. growth; train staff through internal and external resources

  • Provide leadership to the team

  • Be a strong communicator that empowers others

  • Practice servant leadership – be willing to lend a hand/support everyone in their sphere of influence

  • Be a collaborative leader. Work closely with DEN and 1898 & Co. leadership to develop and implement strategies that achieve success for the region and the global practice.

  • Review resource requirements with Department and Section Managers across 1898 & Co. to help obtain and provide resources for project execution

  • Manage and execute projects that meet or exceed client expectations for quality, schedule and budget.

  • Plan, coordinate, communicate and facilitate delivery of consulting and technology solutions on projects of all sizes from conception through completion. Successful completion of projects by collaborating and coordinating with internal and external clients.

  • Initiate business development, proposal strategy and contract negotiations; responsible for coordinating project planning including scoping, budgeting, maintaining schedules, communicating and managing deadlines and establishing and performing to critical project objectives.

  • Interface directly and collaborate with 1898 & Co. leadership in WHQ and other regional offices

  • Serve as Legal and HR liaison

  • Responsible for strategic client account identification, growth and maintenance

  • Direct management of 1898 & Co. department/section managers in DEN

  • Responsible for adherence to the Burns & McDonnell Quality Control program.

Responsible for all key financial metrics for 1898 & Co. in the DEN office, which include:

  1. Sales

  2. Revenue (consulting and non-hourly revenue – i.e. product sales, value-added reseller, managed services, etc.)

  3. Billable time

  4. Gross profit

  5. Effective labor multiplier

  6. Administrative and marketing costs

  7. Equity charges / invoicing management

  8. Sales BacklogNet Income

  9. Pre-discretionary income per person

  10. All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, computer science, business, or related field from an accredited curriculum. Graduate degree preferred.

  • Minimum 13 years of professional and/or management experience preferred. Experience must include business development, project planning and execution, staff development and mentoring, financial management, and client coordination.

  • Consulting experience preferred.

  • Must have ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of government, private, and public contracts on project and business development matters.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills and ability to process and manage project financial data.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Professional Registrations and Certifications preferred.

Compensation Range


The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The final agreed upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
