Burns & McDonnell Department Manager - Transmission and Distribution (Michigan) in Detroit, Michigan
Description
The Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Department Manager will report to the Chicago T&D Operations Director and be responsible for overall internal development and management including recruiting, strategic business planning, financial management, client growth, design innovation strategies, training, mentoring, quality, and safety. This position will work closely with the Detroit and Chicago T&D management team for growth and strategy of the business throughout Michigan.
Specific areas of responsibility include:
Organizational
Advocating for safety within the department.
Coordinating work for the T&D department including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
Supporting overall regional office development and resource coordination between global practices.
Interpreting organizational policies, procedures, and goals to staff.
Assisting in the development and execution of the Michigan T&D Business Plan.
Preparing and monitoring the department budget and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.
Supporting diversity initiatives.
Supporting Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.
Recommending changes in the basic structure and organization of the department to promote the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to it.
Responsible for overseeing the identification of project and portfolio risks including the administration of the associated mitigation strategies to provide for a portfolio of work that meets or exceeds set goals.
Business Development
Responsible for supporting the strategic growth of the T&D business in Michigan, including the growth of the existing business lines (high-voltage electric substation & transmission, overhead and underground electric distribution, SCADA & telecom, and natural gas transmission, stations, & distribution), developing business lanes (electric renewables, renewable gas, data centers, electric vehicle infrastructure, industrial, etc.), and delivery methods (professional services, program management, EPC, passive revenue, etc.).
Ensure profitable and sound growth. Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.
Manage the office financials to generate a positive net return.
Assist the Chicago business line leaders in providing overall oversight and direction for the business development of the Michigan T&D Market. Work with the appropriate personnel on the development and administration of the T&D Business Plan.
Work closely with the various Chicago business line leaders to oversee the development of T&D work with new clients as well as the expansion of T&D work with existing clients.
Provide for the development and leveraging of a strong ‘Burns and McDonnell India’ (or other value engineering) team dedicated to the support of Michigan T&D projects.
Identify opportunities, provide oversight and enthusiasm for a coordinated and disciplined pursuit process including thoughtful “go/no-go” decisions, win strategies, proposal staffing, development of pricing, contract terms and conditions, and risk-reviews.
Personnel
Training, developing, mentoring, and career-development of the staff.
Recruiting top talent as well as the engagement and retention of staff.
Where needed, serve as project manager or project lead/engineer for key clients, new clients, or where new lines of business are being developed.
Management and career development of department personnel. Responsible for the development of leadership within the department.
Organizing, leading, and conducting the annual performance appraisal process for department staff.
Facilitate a thriving work environment that facilitates the recruitment, development, and retainment of the market’s top-talent.
Technical/Execution/Production
Serve as the technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on T&D Engineering projects.
Advocate for quality and ensure that the corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented, including coordinating with the appropriate teams to assign quality control reviewers.
Advancing and developing department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in engineering, architecture, construction or related degree from accredited program and 7 years related professional experience in design and/or project management required.
Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer is preferred.
Technical ability in Substation, Transmission Line, or Distribution Engineering Design is strongly preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
Ability to handle large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
