Burns & McDonnell Staff Mechanical/Piping Engineer - Oil, Gas & Chemical (Houston) in Houston, Texas


We are seeking to hire a Staff Piping Engineer within our Oil, Gas & Chemical Global Practice in our Houston, TX regional office!

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the line list performing calculations and liaison with all associated groups in order to complete and issue the document.

  • Develop and maintain specialty items and datasheets.

  • Develop and update requisitions and perform technical bid evaluations to include fabrication/construction specifications of all piping components and materials.

  • Complete inquiry packages from issue to procurement of materials or subcontract pricing.

  • Review and prepare bid tabulations on quotations received.

  • Perform pipe stress analysis (both manual and computer) to verify the piping design layouts are in compliance with applicable codes.

  • Perform detailed design manual stress calculations or computerized stress calculations as required to markup stress isometrics with relevant comments for piping design, civil/structural and pressure vessel groups for the design purposes.

  • Check calculations made by other engineers (under some supervision)

  • Learn to assist the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems.

  • Work with the Piping Engineering Lead to ensure that piping drawings match the design calculations.

  • Learn to assist the Piping Engineering Lead in various project activities


  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical/piping engineering from an accredited program.

  • Minimum 3 years related experience (completion of master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience).

  • Experience using Caesar II.

  • Completion of FE exam and capable of obtaining PE.

  • Keen safety awareness.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Works well in a multi-company team environment.

  • Able to perform job walks wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in operating facility.

  • This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.

  • Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.
