Description
The Technical Manager for Planning is responsible for establishing consistency and direction in our technical groups through leadership, direction, and oversight of the technical staff. They will position Burns & McDonnell as a technical leader through establishing market trends and opportunities and providing direction for annual goals to improve technical excellence. The primary mission for the Technical Manager is to foster a culture where technical excellence is valued, recognized, and rewarded for the importance it brings to our organization.
Manage the development of technical staff and provides guidance that continues to promote technical staff into leadership roles on our project teams.
Manages the implementation of innovation to engineering processes, focused on efficiency, tools, and technology.
Cultivates, facilitates, and guides technical execution best practices and documentation across department.
Manage the application of project-related quality reviews to the practices of the business line.
Identify and develop future technical staff.
Recruit, interview, assess and hire prospective technical candidates as needed in collaboration with department management.
Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement. Fosters a creative, cross-discipline, cross-office, and cross-GP mentality within technical teams, enabling them to be better leveraged as a training tool and to be the seam for cross selling knowledge adoption.
Facilitates identification of goals, objectives, and deliverables within established consistent framework from team to team.
Establishes and maintains accountability for deliverables.
Identifies and assigns appropriate development and maintenance of technical resources through teams (specifications, design tools, technology, etc.)
Manages internal technical training for department, collaborating with resource management to maintain training consistency, effectiveness, and vision.
Manages continued training for technical staff, establishing balance between internal and external training.
Oversees training and development for potential Project Engineers and Technical Consultants.
Fosters and grows mentorship and coaching platform for department technical career track.
Fosters thought leadership mentality at all levels and positions across department.
Identifies and communicates market trends in business line.
Responsible for strategically maintaining and communicating relevant opportunities for industry involvement, including societies and conference attendance.
Initiates coordination with appropriate business line leadership and department leadership to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to our technical business.
Sets direction by developing annual goals for improving technical business within department.
Regularly meet with Department Managers, Project Directors, and Project Managers to coordinate staffing needs, performance, and proper utilization of staff.
Support Regional Office development and technical resource coordination.
Support sales and marketing efforts for Department specific projects.
Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgement in anticipating and solving problems.
Recommend changes in basic structure and organization of the department to meet growth strategies and long-term department objectives.
Collaborates with technical staff to drive industry focus and strategically plan for involvement to obtain annual technical business goals.
Drive a culture of quality and continual improvement.
Ensure the requirements of the Burns & McDonnell Quality Management System are observed.
Facilitate the department design non-conformance and corrective action process.
Identify and develop corrective actions associated with non-conformance trends in the department.
Coordinate with quality manager to provide internal audit support, including the development of corrective actions to address audit findings.
Assess effectiveness of corrective actions and develop alternatives, as necessary.
Advocate safety in the department and division.
Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in related field required; Master's Degree strongly preferred
Minimum of seven (7) years related professional experience required; fifteen (15) years strongly preferred.
Demonstrated technical ability internally and externally.
Proven leadership in developing and implementing vision that has brought positive impact.
Demonstrated excellent written & verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment.
Proven collaboration, facilitation, and organization problem solving skills in previous roles.
Professional Engineer (PE) License Required
