Brief Description: This position is responsible for the direction and leadership of the Kansas City Architectural Department within the Water Global Practice (WTR). This position will have up to ten (10) direct reports comprised of mid- and junior-level architectural staff, design and drafting staff, and others as assigned.

Detailed Description:

The primary purpose of the Water Global Practice (WTR) Architectural Section Manager is to oversee, support, and protect our greatest asset – our people. The WTR Architectural Section Manager will foster a culture where project delivery and technical excellence is valued, recognized, and rewarded for the importance it brings to our organization.

Working with other WTR Department and Section Managers, this individual will establish consistency and direction in our project execution through leadership, direction, and oversight of the WTR architectural career path. They will align and deploy our project execution and technical expertise to our architectural business needs across the organization and lead our architecture group in a dynamic and profitable manner based upon Burns & McDonnell’s core values of safety, employee ownership, diversity and inclusion, client service, quality, commitment, and integrity.

Areas of Responsibility:

Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned:

  • Lead a dynamic group focused on retaining and bringing in the best architecture talent, setting clear expectations, onboarding, and developing staff to set them up for success, as well as engaging, leveraging, and empowering our staff based on their individual strengths.

  • Direct and coordinate efforts to manage resources, forecast, optimize and ensure efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff, including properly investing overhead labor and costs, to achieve stated targets and standards for architectural utilization performance.

  • Implement, apply and support company, global practice, and/or regional office programs and initiatives; successfully navigating and managing change within the section.

  • Develop and foster a culture of innovation that challenges the norm and utilizes tools, technology, and processes to drive continuous improvement and efficiency Prepare and present workload and monthly financial reports to global practice, department, or applicable project management.

  • Recruit, hire, develop, and retain outstanding employee-owners, including establishing clear lines of proactive employee feedback and recognition.

  • Serve as a mentor and coach to direct reports and advocate by meeting regularly, listening to each individual’s short- and long-term goals, and providing guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.

  • Be responsible for administering performance evaluation activities for engineering staff and for conducting performance evaluations for direct reports.

  • Responsible for interpreting policies, purposes and goals of the organization to staff.

  • Responsible for collaborating with business development managers, business line leads, project managers, and proposal production staff on proposals to secure work for the staff.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies and quality control program.

  • Actively foster a culture based on our MacCulture principles, quality, diversity and inclusion, and team cohesion and camaraderie.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture required (chemical, civil, environmental, or other from an accredited program). Minimum five (5) years related professional experience. This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments. Candidates must possess strong management skills and a strategic perspective. Other desired qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated leadership and/or direct management of professionals with the ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.

  • Demonstrated understanding of WTR project delivery methods, specifically as it relates to municipal and industrial projects (design-bid-build, design-build, EPC, etc.), as well as experience with the infrastructure and components related to municipal water and wastewater treatment and conveyance.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information and strategic WTR Practice information, as well as clearly state goals and objectives, to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, planning, and analytical skills.

  • Proven collaboration, facilitation, and organization problem solving skills in previous roles through demonstration of an ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment; capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Experience and familiarity with corporate human resources policies.

  • Must be currently licensed as a Professional Engineer and/or Registered Architect and/or able to obtain licensure within six (6) months.

Utilization: 85% (minimum)

Travel: As required (anticipated to be less than 15% of the time)
