Burns & McDonnell Assistant Project Specialist - Transportation (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


This is an opportunity to join a program team with one of the region’s leading engineering firms in support of a landmark program for the Kansas Department of Transportation. You will be working with a dynamic team on industry-leading methods and approaches to bring value to the transportation network and systems across Kansas. We are looking for someone who is incredibly organized and enjoys data and information tracking. The primary location of this position is at the World Headquarters location in Kansas City, Missouri, but will intermittently office in the Lawrence location as well.

The Assistant Project Specialist assists with the project, financial health, and project scheduling systems for engineering related projects. This position coordinates with internal project management to provide solutions in the execution of project needs within the budget and schedule.

  • Assist with the set-up of projects in the applicable cost management system.

  • Assist with analyzing and monitoring project health in the internal cost management system and assist in compiling report findings.

  • Assist with project scheduling activities and deliverables.

  • Assist with the maintenance of the budget tracking system and reporting project status.

  • Assist with processing project change orders.

  • Assist with entering changes to the cost reports.

  • Assist with monthly project analysis reports.

  • Assist with entering project scheduling information.

  • Assist with quality assurance on data and information for the project financial deliverables.

  • Assist with Work Breakdown Structure for tracking the breakdown of purchase orders and subcontracts.

  • Assist with organizing and maintaining project files and client deliverables and project communications.

  • Assist in creating and maintain comprehensive project documentation, plans and reports.

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and facilitating on-site and off-site meetings for the project/ program. This may include project orientation and training, stakeholder meetings, team meetings, periodic reviews, etc.

  • Assist in developing and refining procedures pertaining to internal project requirements.

  • Responsibility for accurate data entry on projects.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree required and 2 years experience in a related field.

  • Experience with one or more cost management systems preferred.

  • Ability to work independently, think creatively and analytically, and make quick and sound decisions.

  • Excellent problem solving skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with all levels within an organization.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is required.
