Burns & McDonnell Electrical Section Manager - Municipal Water (Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit) in Kansas City, Missouri

This position is responsible for the direction and leadership of members of the Electrical Section of the Municipal Department within the Water Global Practice. The Electrical Section Manager will lead their section dynamically and profitably based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by senior management:

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the team; direct and coordinate work assignments and review performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of Electrical Engineering staff.

  • Responsible for profitable growth of the section; manage staff workload and productivity in support of projects and utilization goals. Prepare and present workload and monthly financial reports to global practice or regional management and applicable project managers.

  • Advocating for safety within the group. Ensuring compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Recruitment, development, training, and retention of staff.

  • Communicate policies, procedures, and goals of department to staff.

  • Provide senior level engineering, designing, and specification preparing guidance and evaluation on projects.

  • Develop standards and guidelines that are in accordance with Burns & McDonnell quality and standards for department.

  • Review and conduct employee performance appraisals (90 days, mid-year, and annual performance appraisal, coaching sessions, etc.).

  • Lead the efforts for developing engineering, designing, and specification standards for global practice. Responsible for overall QA/QC process adherence.

  • Create training opportunities for department. Ensure the opportunities are in line with the development of team/individual.

  • Assist team in the prioritization and implementation of projects.

  • Responsible for collaborating with business development managers, business line leads, project managers, and proposal production staff on proposals to secure work for staff.

  • Responsible for interpreting policies, purposes and goals of the organization to staff.

  • Support diversity initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction or related degree from an accredited program; Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years related professional experience in design and/or project management.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the Water GP's project delivery methods specifically as it relates to Water Municipal projects (design-bid-build, design-build, EPC, etc.) preferred.

  • Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferable.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • The ability to effectively mentor and provide career and technical guidance, particularly to entry-level staff strongly preferred.

  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Experience with the infrastructure and components related to municipal water and wastewater treatment and conveyance preferred.

  • Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.

  • Must be expert in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
