1898 & Co.’s Business Lines have been developed to facilitate a strategic approach to selling services, developing staff, and maintaining client relationships. A Business Line lead’s (i.e., director’s) main responsibility is to set the near-term and long-term vision for achieving these goals within the Business Line that supports the growth of Power System Planning and 1898 & Co.

The Grid Modernization & Distribution Planning Business Line Lead will direct the Business Line’s offerings in support of a broad range of clients in electrical distribution planning and application of grid technologies to improve grid performance today and ready the grid for the future challenges represented by distributed generation and electrification. It is also preferred that this position has knowledge of operational technologies and grid device integration such as outage and distribution management systems (OMS/DMS), business processes and associated back-office systems, policies and standards, and utility regulatory requirements.

This Business Line lead will be a seller-doer, conducting sales and marketing activities and executing projects. The Business Line lead will directly engage with clients to identify new work, prepare proposals, establish project objectives, formulate project approaches, and manage/oversee a team of consultants/engineers to meet the project objectives and provide the client with useful and actionable deliverables.

Responsibilities:

The Business Line lead will be responsible for and manage, all aspects of the Grid Modernization & Distribution Planning service offerings from business planning, business development, project execution, and team leadership. Key responsibilities will include:

Business Planning & Strategy: Create, develop, manage, and communicate the strategic direction of the Business Line. This will include the setting of financial targets for the Business Line, such as sales, revenue, profitability, and chargeability, as well as budgets for overhead expenses, such as marketing trips, conferences, software, certifications, etc. Prepare and manage a business plan for the strategic growth of the Business Line including expansion of current and new service offerings, marketing activities, client retention and acquisition, and staff growth plan.

Business Development & Sales: Execute the business plan to grow sales and revenue for the Business Line; coordinate with business development managers to identify opportunities and propose services to key clients; assign client relationships to project managers supporting the Business Line; collaborate with sales and marketing staff to develop proposals, collateral, and other marketing material to grow the Business Line; develop new, and manage existing client relationships through client marketing and project interactions; identify new sales opportunities with clients; lead all aspects of proposal development and submission including project planning, budgeting, and scheduling; establish critical project objectives and performances with clients; lead contract preparation and negotiations.

Project Execution: Facilitate timely, quality, and profitable execution of projects within the Business Line; serve as project director and quality control leader for Business Line deliverables; accountable for key financial performance metrics within the Business Line; accountable for the technical execution of projects within the Business Line. Serve as a project manager, as required, leading all aspects of project execution including scope, schedule, and budget; ensure quality control of deliverables; analyze and communicate project status, risks, schedule, and costs to all internal and external stakeholders; lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and analysts; plan, organize, and communicate project personnel needs to department management.

Leadership: Mentor and train less experienced staff on technical and business aspects of projects and the industry; serve as a recognized industry leader in Grid Modernization and Distribution Planning; support company initiatives; support the hiring of experienced employee owners required to grow the Business Line; identify the training needed for staff to develop and sharpen skills related to Business Line services

Personnel Development: Mentor, train, and support the career development of project managers within the business line, with specific direct supervisory responsibilities for local project managers and senior technical consultants.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering or related field from an accredited program. Advanced degree is a plus such as an MBA or Engineering Management.

  • Minimum 7 years of related experience with a broad and deep understanding of Grid Modernization & Distribution Planning studies, including 3 or more years managing engineering or consulting projects.

  • Deep and broad base of knowledge of the electric utility industry, specifically regarding the study, design, and operation of electric utility distribution systems.

  • Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of engineers and analysts in regard to grid modernization or distribution planning studies.

  • Proven ability to lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and analysts.

  • General business and financial calculation knowledge.

  • Effective Project Management skills.

  • Ability to work with existing and new clients to identify new projects, articulate to the clients our ability to perform those projects, and translate that into the sale of consulting services.

  • Ability to communicate with various business contacts to understand their needs and translate them into a scope of work that meets their desired outcomes.

  • Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines and to be effective in on-site work environments.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.

  • Ability to focus on the big picture to effectively and efficiently provide services that meet client needs, while also having the ability to identify and analyze details that are critical to project outcomes.

  • Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs and the market requires changes to the service offerings provided by our group.

  • Willingness and ability to develop a broad set of service offering types to allow for flexibility to go where the work is.

  • Willingness to cross-sell other services offered by Burns & McDonnell outside the director’s core set of services.

  • Willingness to negotiate with clients for new service agreements.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).

  • Must have the ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of industry, government, and public contracts on project-related matters.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Professional Registration is preferred.

  • Ability to travel.
