Process Technology Director — Water (Kansas City) (ID: 220658)

Successful growth and development of the Water Practice within Burns & McDonnell has led to the need for a more dedicated process and technology group to develop, leverage and grow process and technology expertise across the practice. With expanding opportunities in the water sector, especially with alternative delivery, the development of innovative process technology solutions and approaches is anticipated to form a key component of our future growth and development. The Process and Technology Manager will be expected to coordinate, create, and support sales, engineering and project delivery with essential resources through client development, capture, execution and project closeout.

Sales and Marketing — Supporting leaders within the Water practice with client engagement activities such as client meetings, workshops, proposal preparation, interviews, and relationship development with crucial client technical leaders.

Project Delivery — supporting process development and selection of vendor equipment technology, scope and specifications. Develop commercial criteria such as performance testing, commissioning and acceptance for project closeout. Resolve conflicts that may arise, such as scope, performance, design and testing. Support development of commissioning plans for successful project completion and handover.

Engineering – providing process engineering documentation such as flow diagrams, P&IDs, initial datasheets, specifications, and process control narratives to communicate and develop with other engineering design leads.

Job Function

  • Lead, and as necessary, establish communities of practice with anticipated specialty areas in water treatment, wastewater treatment — liquid and biosolids, industrial water supply and waste treatment, conveyance and collection and water supply and storage.

  • With company leadership, assist in developing career paths for process and technology staff development and professional growth.

  • Assist in setting utilization goals and managing staff assignments to support regional business development and project execution activities

  • Raise company industry technology profile through active and selective participation with key associations such as WEF, and AWWA through committee representation, presentation, and conference participation at the National and key regional association events.

  • Responsible for process scope, negotiations with suppliers, development, and managing risk associated with the context of overall project and contract requirements.

  • Bring innovative approaches to major proposals and project delivery to raise competitiveness in the market

  • Evaluation of teaming partners, whether engineering, O&M, or technology suppliers, to increase win rate.

The Process Technology Manager in our Water/Wastewater Global Practice is responsible for the managerial leadership of Process Technology's strategic business initiatives, client strategy and development and large team project management. The Process Technology Manager will assist in leading the Department dynamically and profitably based on our Water Global Practice and Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service.

  • Develop and execute the Process Technology strategic business initiatives to achieve goals and objectives.

  • Provide direction on business development efforts in identifying and vetting prospective clients and projects. Responsible for business development activities aligning with business goals.

  • Provide leadership to the Process Technology team; manage and coordinate the Department, ensuring efficient and cost-effective staff utilization.

  • Assist in managing Process Technology business development efforts.

  • Manage the development of department tools and workflows to increase efficiency in designs, specification development, and project execution for the Department.

  • Responsible for oversight and management of Process Technology budget and expenditure of funds.

  • Achieve stated targets and standards for Process Technology's financial performance.

  • Provide industry expertise for the competition.

  • Present monthly financial information to leadership, including sales and revenue forecasts.

  • Responsible for cross-selling engineering services across the organization.

  • Responsible for ensuring alignment and support of Regional Office staff development, quality control and resource coordination.

  • Recruits, hires, develops, and retains outstanding employee-owners.

  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluations for selected departments or direct reports.

  • Responsible for interpreting policies, purposes and goals of the organization to Department Managers.

  • Adheres and is responsible for Burns & McDonnell Quality Control program.

  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • Responsible for diversity initiatives.

  • All other duties as assigned.


Qualifications — External

  • Bachelor's degree in construction, engineering, business, or related from an accredited program. A minimum of 13 years of relevant consulting experience, preferably in the process industry and project management. 25 years of water experience preferred.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer preferred.

  • Expert experience in client and business development.

  • Expert experience in managing projects, including proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.

  • Expert facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated success in the budget, savings and profit margins in completed projects.

  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead and manage.

  • Excellent planning and analytical skills.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Expert knowledge of project management methodologies and tools, including Microsoft Project or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated experience leading process-intensive projects with a construction value greater than $100M​​​​​

  • Prior experience managing at-risk projects such as design-build, EPC, and CMAR delivery approaches

  • Client and teaming partner network across the Americas desired.
