Burns & McDonnell Rural Broadband Business Lane Lead - Networks, Integration, and Automation (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri
Federal funding has recently become available to rural cooperatives, municipal utilities, and internet service providers (ISPs) across the United States as part of a 10-year program to bring broadband Internet services to remote and underserved regions. Our Networks, Integration & Automation (NIA) team is well-positioned with our electric utility industry and communications design experience to meet the needs of an emerging client base for fiber/wireless network consulting, strategy, planning, and execution services for rural broadband.
NIA leadership has recognized a need to focus our services offerings surrounding the Rural Broadband emerging business lane to better meet our clients’ needs, provide sound business analysis for project development opportunities, and establish accountable ownership of the area. The Rural Broadband Business Lane Lead role will be established and be responsible for the oversight, direction, and leadership of business development, pursuits, and project execution within this emerging business lane.
As an emerging business lane, rather than a dedicated technical team being established, it is envisioned the Fiber, Wireless, Infrastructure, and Networks core technical teams will be heavily leveraged by the Rural Broadband team for technical consultation and project execution.
The areas of responsibility for the Rural Broadband Business Lane Lead role include the following duties:
Serve as the main external point-of-contact for their business lane to industry/clients, other T&D business lines, project managers, account managers, engineer-procure-construct (EPC) teams, department managers, other NIA business lanes, Construction/Design-Build (CDB), and other Global Practices.
Serve as the main point-of-contact to support pursuit and project teams with specific technical support in their business lane.
Work with technical team and to develop standard technical qualifications and project approach descriptions for proposals, acting as the accountable owner for this content.
Work with project managers to develop/update project descriptions, consistently capturing experience and qualifications for business lane.
Work to proactively identify and position Burns & McDonnell for upcoming projects and opportunities in their business lane.
Proactively identify, mentor, and train the next generation of project managers, project engineers, and technical consultants in their business lane.
Represent business lane at the national level across all regional offices. Drive consistency and work with appropriate technical teams to obtain technical input and team focus across all regional offices.
In concert with the appropriate technical teams, serve as an internal subject matter authority in their business lane. Provide advanced technical guidance to the department and play a key role in establishing and working with appropriate technical teams, technical team leads, and technical consultants in the business lane to drive team initiatives forward.
Proactively drive the mission and goals of the appropriate technical teams. Work with technical team leads to establish meeting topics, set direction and expectations for team members related to the business lane, and work with the NIA management to set annual goals and initiatives for advancing Burns & McDonnell’s technical position in their business lane.
Work with appropriate technical teams to write and submit technical papers, attend and present at technical conferences, and actively participate and lead industry working groups.
Focus on growing technical knowledge by proactively finding opportunities for advanced training for both the team and NIA.
Maintain substantial billability through their current titled position and project leadership.
Perform other duties as assigned by NIA management.
Bachelor's degree in engineering, economics, business, or related field from an accredited curriculum.
Licensed as a Professional Engineer preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to communicate technical and complex subjects to all levels of client organizations.
Capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of business lane services.
Capable of devising new approaches to solve complex problems within business lane.
Ten (10) years of experience in consulting and/or design execution of telecommunications projects.
Four (4) years of project management and/or business line management experience.
Ability to build consensus amongst multiple internal stakeholders, including staff and management in T&D, CDB, Operations (OPR), and other Global Practices.
Capable of effectively marketing business lane services to potential clients, utilizing existing industry contacts and NIA sales support.
Understanding of a consultative sales approach to identifying and providing technical and commercial solutions to customer’s needs.
Acumen in business case analysis, client consulting, strategic project planning, and design/implementation services conversion.
