Burns & McDonnell Senior Mechanical / Piping Designer -Municipal Water / Wastewater (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


Burns & McDonnell's Water Global Practice in Kansas City, MO is seeking to hire Senior Process Piping Designers to support projects in the sector of municipal water infrastructure.

A Senior Piping Designer will lead various phases of planning, site evaluations, analytical designs, design documents for proposals, report preparation, specifications, and preparation of construction documentation and piping plans as part of a project team. This position will lead various projects with a diverse portfolio of project types and clients. Work includes conceptual studies, detailed design, and construction support for water and wastewater projects.

  • Lead a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, incorporating various system components, and refining rough sketches.

  • Follow all company, client and project design and drafting standards.

  • Maintains and promotes a focus on safety and Burns & McDonnell’s final deliverables.

  • Train, mentor, and develop less experienced drafting, detailing and design staff members.

  • Produce and quality review PFDs and P&IDs from verbal or written description from the design engineer.

  • Model/route piping in 3D software.

  • Maintain and create 3D component and family libraries.

  • Execute and quality review basic formulas, principles and practices, and use acquired knowledge of fundamental concepts and practices about the piping discipline.

  • Plan and develop drawings for production work, in addition to lead drawing, planning, development and production work, including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

  • Execute various piping design assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components, and refining rough sketches

  • Direct and/or execute changes to designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.

  • Analyze and approve reports, drawings, and tests to plan and lead design projects to meet deliverables.

  • Interpret, approve and incorporate design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

  • Lead and review production of design drawings for quality assurance within scope, budget and schedule. Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.

  • Compute calculations for layouts, equipment, wiring diagrams, and schematics under the direction of the engineer.

  • Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into piping design and layouts for project financial goals.

  • Responsible for the quality review of all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • Participate in marketing and client development meetings.

  • Responsible for the piping design QA/QC process.

  • Responsible for clear and concise written and verbal communications as it relates to the project client coordination.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and thirteen years related experience or associate's degree and fourteen years related experience or fifteen years progressive detailing and design experience.

  • Expert understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Revit, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.

  • Expert ability to utilize 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

  • Expert knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Expert knowledge in the theory and practices of assigned discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Work collaboratively with others including, but not limited to clients, Project Managers, Engineers and Designers in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.
