Burns & McDonnell Senior RF Engineer - Networks, Integration, & Automation (Multiple Locations) in Kansas City, Missouri
Burns & McDonnell is seeking an experienced senior radiofrequency (RF) engineer to support multiple large-scale 4G LTE projects for clients nationwide. The RF Engineer is responsible for the engineering design and system performance of Radio Access Network (RAN) cellular-based networks. The optimal candidate has experience developing designs, plans, including radio propagation modeling and prediction, interference analysis, frequency coordination, cell site equipment layout, parameter definition, and ancillary equipment. Experience overseeing installation, maintenance, optimization, and/or performance of wireless RAN communications systems is also a plus.
Performing macro 4G/5G design, including antenna selection and placement, utilizing knowledge of 3GPP, GSM, UMTS, HSPA , FDD, and TDD LTE, and Small Cell.
Creating RF design, propagation modeling, CD reviews, search area issuance, candidate assessment, performing site walks, and other RF design tasks. Effectively applies RF principles to performance activities.
Performs coverage, capacity, and system performance planning activities for the network. Optimize the end-to-end RF design, propagation modeling, and prediction.
Applies engineering principles to design and optimize network coverage, performance, and capacity.
Work alongside the RF team to establish design criteria, link budget, and traffic analysis as needed for network design and update existing performance parameters.
Provide clear 4G and 5G design guidance for Nokia, Samsung, and Ericsson products by researching upcoming/existing RAN equipment and understanding of industry direction.
Partner with functional disciplines (ex: eNB/RAN, UE, infrastructure, backhaul, etc.) to develop and deliver solutions that complement overall system and network performance and operational requirements.
May be required to lead a team of engineers on specific projects. Serves as a technical subject matter expert and may be required to analyze new features and technologies in-depth.

Mentors junior RF engineers for technical growth.
Supports engineering and technical staff. Provides engineering support to sales/customers by responding to customer and employee requests. Provides input to management on tactical and strategic issues.
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Science Engineering or an equivalent technical degree.
PE or EIT licensure is desirable but not required. Experience with the US utility industry is an advantage.
Minimum 8 Years' experience working in the cellular or telecommunications industry with direct experience in RF design, network optimization, or operations.
Minimum 5 Years' relevant LTE experience analyzing data and creating RF coverage solutions using industry-standard RF planning tools. This includes full proficiency in setting up, calibration, utilization, and data processing of various LTE design and optimization equipment and software.
Demonstrable experience with industry-standard RF propagation/planning tools and model calibrations. Forsk Atoll preferred. Infovista Planet accepted. Expert level experience in Atoll is a plus.
Working knowledge of drive test data collection, post-processing, map generation, frequency planning, and interference analysis.
Solid understanding of RF propagation principles, cellular theory, RF engineering tools, antenna theory.
Working knowledge and understanding of LTE network KPIs and key parameters, including proficiency in model tuning
Experience in design and optimization of LTE/VoLTE networks.
Protocol knowledge of 5G-NR, 4G LTE, VoLTE, UMTS, and GSM interfaces is desired. Experience in 5G, LTE, CDMA networks and their performance.
Direct experience with multi-vendor RF hardware from companies such as Ericsson, Nokia, or Samsung.
Strong skills in geospatial information systems (GIS) software, such as ArcGIS or MapInfo, and associate post-processing techniques.
Ability to develop software tools and/or scripts to maximize efficiencies for analyzing data and performing data integrity checks.
Strong problem-solving skills. Desired ability to tackle problems using logical, systematic, and sequential approaches.
