Burns & McDonnell Staff Pipeline Facility Designer - Pipelines (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


Position will be responsible for performing pipeline facility design for clients across the US. Main responsibilities include working with the design team to create pipeline facility design deliverables. Projects range in size and complexity from small utility regulator station upgrades to large metering and regulation or compressor station projects. This position offers the opportunity to challenge and grow yourself professionally.

Position may include full or partial responsibility of the following assignments:

  • Use of design software to generate mechanical pipeline facility plans, sections, and details

  • Produce complete PFDs and P&IDs from verbal or written description from the design engineer.

  • Produce layout of pipeline facility with P&IDs and verbal or written description from the design engineer

  • Generate bill of material from specification library

  • Interpret and incorporate design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

  • Review design drawings for quality assurance within scope, budget and schedule. Perform projects tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.

  • Responsible for the revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information are stored in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • Responsible for clear and concise written and verbal communications, as it relates to the project client coordination.

  • Develop and improve processes and tools for effective production

  • Provide leadership, training and mentoring to less experienced CAD detailers and team members


  • Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or related field or associate’s degree and related experience

  • Advanced understanding of design software: Microstation, AutoCAD, CADWorx, and Excel to develop design deliverables. Preference for familiarity with Plant 3D and Civil 3D

  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs

  • Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings

  • Knowledge in the theory and practices of engineering discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives

  • Strong preference for those with:

  • Capability of solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard approaches, techniques, procedures and criteria
