Burns & McDonnell Staff Structural Lead Engineer/Project Manager – Energy (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri
Burns & McDonnell, industry-leading employee-owned engineering, consulting, and construction company, has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Structural Lead/Project Manager to assist us to continue to develop and expand our presence in the structural upgrades segment of the power generation market.
This position is responsible for identifying opportunities, client strategy, proposal development and submission, and execution of projects and pursuits. The qualified candidate will lead projects in a seller-doer manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service. The Project Manager / Lead Engineer will be responsible for fostering a culture of proactive communication, continuous improvement, and a focus on serving our customers and increasing our customer base. This position will assist with the development of a structural upgrades strategy to further Burns & McDonnell’s position, establishing the sales and business development plans for growth objectives, and facilitating collaboration with regional activities, pursuits, and projects.
The individual will be experienced in pursuits, design, and construction for the power market. Specific retrofit experience would be an asset.
Will be accountable to lead project teams to develop and deliver projects to make our clients successful. Project scope will range from technical support and troubleshooting, to design services, to full engineer/procure/construct (EPC). In addition, this individual will be expected to interface and communicate with customers and key stakeholders on a regular basis. Visits to site, customers’ facilities, suppliers, and other miscellaneous travel to facilitate the business growth is expected. It is anticipated that this individual will be approximately 80% billable, leading and managing projects in this market segment.
Executes complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods.
Develop and evaluate plans for major projects.
Assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient, or testing is advisable.
Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports, or project design assignments.
Report market conditions, status, and overall business strategy to the Energy GP Management on a quarterly basis.
Will have progressive design and project management responsibilities.
Will provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.
Participate in the development of construction specifications, project schedules, project budgets, project staffing planning, and construction planning.
Regularly meeting and corresponding with current and perspective customers or outside personnel.
Direct coordination of project activities with clients, vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
Initiate or assist in proposal development and contract negotiations.
Responsible for establishing critical project objectives, project planning, budgeting, execution, and closure.
Collaborate and partner with internal BMCD global practices and regional offices to provide internal and external solutions.
Provide industry expertise with respect to the competition.

Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
Or Bachelor of Science in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering may be substituted for 1 year experience.
3 years of structural engineering experience, consulting required.
5 years preferred
Successful completion (i.e.passing) FE or EIT preferred.
Experience successfully pursuing proposals and leading proposal efforts.
Must have the ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
EPC project experience is preferred.
Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Previous consultant experience is preferred.
Understanding the market and being acquainted and connected with numerous power industry clients and users is strongly preferred.
This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.
Professional Engineer License is preferred
Ability to travel is required. Travel will range from 20% to 40%.
Strong computer skills include structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA 3D), AutoCAD, ETABS, SAFE and BIM (e.g., Revit and Tekla), preferred
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
