Description
Advise clients regarding mechanical systems/requirements available to meet their needs and comply with safety codes.
Designing mechanical systems/equipment to meet client requirements.
Participate in developing the design criteria for air and water side of building mechanical systems.
Peer review mechanical designs and specifications of equipment or systems.
Developing concept studies and designs.
Provide written reports of system options.
Write specifications for Mechanical systems.
Co-ordinate with other disciplines including Architect and Structures.
Enforce standards and practices.
Prepare calculations and technical/equipment specification documentation.
Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes.
Health & Safety compliance and preparation of associated safety documentation, e.g. pre-construction information documents.
Functional responsibilities
Lead a team of Mechanical, Electrical and PH Engineers

Lead successful output of engineering deliverables in the UK business, working closely with the Engineering Director to assemble suitable engineering personnel from across our global offices, as required.
Be a lead technical role on engineering work packages, including undertaking the role of Lead Project Engineer on project teams, as required.
Produce detailed engineering design packages, compliant to required client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA) using industry standard software.
Lead various project designs including site design, land development, roads, storm drainage systems, storm water management facilities, water and sanitary sewer utility design, sediment and erosion control, and traffic control, airports, and facility design.
Lead drawing production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
Lead a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.
Incorporate and approve schedules, budgets and project criteria into design and layouts for project financial goals.
Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
Undertake consultancy role on FEED stage projects, including production of technical reports and presentations.
Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of design undertaken.
Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off, as required, on engineering designs.
Work closely with other sections with the UK T&D Engineering Team, particularly the Substation Section and Overhead Transmission Section, to enable effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects and facilitate an optimal engineering function in the UK business.
Maintain technical compliance to applicable Burns & McDonnell and client design management standards, processes, and procedures on all work delivered by Section staff.
Develop and implement policies, processes, procedures, standards, and technical guidance, as required to continually improve the engineering capability within the Section.
Report regularly staff utilization forecasts, capability development progress, and any issues requiring office support.
Plan and lead project and client meetings, as required.
Act as Principal Designer representative, as defined by UK Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, where required.
Where appropriate and required, Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), as defined by National Grid’s TP137 procedure, or equivalent role as defined by other clients.
Support the preparation of project proposals and lead tender presentations.
Drive ‘Safety by Design’ approach on all projects, at all times.
Support nurturing of a safety and technical excellence culture through emphasis on staff competence, diligence, and responsible attitude.
Understanding wider industry best practices and client technical standards/procedures for construction, operations & maintenance, and decommissioning, in order to drive safety, constructability, and operability throughout whole asset lifecycles.
Maintain project compliance to Burns & McDonnell’s UK Integrated Management System.
Support nurturing of world-class customer service culture, to drive client success.
Be an ambassador for Burns & McDonnell at all times through acting in accordance with expected high ethical and moral standards, and in adherence to Burns & McDonnell Code of Conduct.
Provide strong but supportive general personnel management of line reports, with emphasis on supporting continued development, providing technical guidance, and establishing training needs.
Actively support marketing and business development activities, building relationships with clients and generating new business
Seeking and development of future business opportunities through nurturing of client relationships, active pursuit of new project leads, and elevation of the Burns & McDonnell brand.
Identifying new skills and competencies required within the Burns & McDonnell team to meet business needs and actively supporting development and recruitment of talent, including candidate interviewing.
Act as technical leader in T&D infrastructure design and contribute to relevant professional bodies and industry groups. Maintain Continued Professional Development (CPD).
Support or lead portions of department meetings; organize and lead section meetings.
Interpret and establish policies, procedures, and strategic goals of the organization.
Assist in determining departmental objectives and requirements, organize projects and develop standards and guidelines.
Support and assist in the development of the UK business plan.
Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
Advance and develop Department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
Undertake other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be asked of this position by Senior Management.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Building Services engineering, from accredited program (equivalent qualifications in a similar field may also be considered).
Minimum of 15 years of related mechanical design experience
Knowledge of mechanical design principles, standards, and codes
Have working knowledge of AutoCad and Revit.
Data center or telecommunication facility experience and knowledge of critical facility Mechanical design.
Experience at Concept design level to assist with the development of data centre masterplans
Ability to write specifications for Mechanical equipment, devices, and materials.
Familiarity with other building systems and coordination with those systems and components
IT literate, with good knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications.
Membership of relevant industry body, e.g. CIBSE, IMechE
