We have an opportunity for a Principal Public Health Engineer to join our team, working on a variety of high-tech building design and construction projects. Project focus would initially be data centres and telecommunications facilities and would grow to include a variety of other facilities including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, manufacturing, airports, or institutional.

This role sits within our global facilities services Mission Critical team, providing an opportunity to build your career and your team to serve this expanding sector.

The Principal Public Health Engineer will lead the plumbing and water based fire protection designs to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline, airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, government and military facilities. The Principal Public Health Engineer will lead a small team throughout the design and construction process, adapting the design according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.


  • Specific areas of responsibility include the following:

  • Lead a small team of PH Engineers

  • Work within a fee budget.

  • Client Facing skills with the ability to discuss and agree Client requirements

  • Attend meetings and be able to participate in presentations

  • Designing mechanical systems/equipment to provide for a useful and safe workplace

  • Advise clients regarding mechanical systems/requirements available to meet their needs and comply with safety codes.

  • Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes.

  • Visit site, carry out inspections, write reports

  • Participate in developing the design criteria for air and water side of building mechanical systems

  • Reviews mechanical designs and specifications of equipment or systems being purchased or fabricated.

  • Developing concept studies and design

  • Provide written reports of system options

  • Write specifications for PH and FP systems

  • Co-ordinate with other disciplines including Architect and Structures.

  • Have working knowledge of AutoCad and Revit.

  • Enforces standards and practices.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, or architectural from accredited program

  • Minimum of 13 years of related public health design experience

  • Knowledge of plumbing and water based fire protection design principles, standards, and codes

  • Knowledge of CAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office skills necessary to accomplish design goals

  • Working towards accreditation of the appropriate professional institution

  • Data center or telecommunication facility experience

  • Knowledge of critical facility design

  • Ability to write specifications for plumbing and water based fire protection equipment, devices, and material

  • Familiarity with other building systems and coordination with those systems and components
