Burns & McDonnell Staff Electrical Engineer - Substation (Minneapolis) in Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota
Responsible for substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US and internationally. Main responsibilities include creating electrical protection & control and/or physical layout design deliverables. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution equipment upgrades to large transmission projects. This position can influence the future of the resiliency, reliability, and economic operation of the electric grid. Opportunities to advance into leadership roles are available.
Position may include leading or executing the following assignments:
Preparation of proposals and scope development, including conceptual designs and execution plans.
Prepare engineering cost and labor-hour estimates and schedules.
Physical substation design including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material.
Protection and control design including panel arrangements, one lines/single lines, three lines, AC schematics, DC elementaries, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
Prepare calculations and reports for engineering studies (grounding, lightning protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)
Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing.
Coordinate design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.). Coordinate design activities with other Burns & McDonnell Global Practices and Office Locations.
Develop and improve processes, tools, and/or implement new technologies into the design process.
Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members.
Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel (material suppliers, construction contractors, etc.)
Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
Provide short-term field support during construction.
Support business development and marketing initiatives
Other areas of involvement may include relay settings, 3D/intelligent design, or industry/professional technical committee involvement.
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for 1-year experience.
3 years of electrical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Successful completion (i.e. Passing) FE or EIT preferred.
Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
Strong computer skills include AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs and other analysis programs.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
