Burns & McDonnell NIA Business Line Manager in Morristown, New Jersey


This position will provide leadership, vision, and be responsible for the overall financial performance of the NEO NIA engineering project portfolio. This position is responsible for the managerial direction, mentorship, development and leadership of NIA PMs and PMITs and overall performance of the NIA business line in the NEO Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Global Practice, reporting directly to the NEO T&D Managing Director. This position’s responsibility will be to grow the NEO NIA business, in a profitable manner based upon Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties assigned by senior management:

  • Advocate safety in the department.

  • Coordinate with T&D NEO leadership, and NIA account managers regarding project assignments as well as coordinate items that effect project and department financial performance of the NIA group and resolve project management related performance challenges.

  • Oversee Profitability and financial performance of the NIA projects portfolio. Responsible for overseeing the identification of NIA project and portfolio risks including the administration of the associated mitigation strategies to provide for a portfolio of work that meets or exceeds set goals.

  • Management and career development of NIA project management and project management in training personnel. Responsible for the development of leadership within the NIA project management group.

  • Coordinate and promote consistency across all NIA project managers and PMIT’s by advancing and developing department tools and processes.

  • Provide mentorship and increase team efficiency to improve business line performance of proposal writing, change management, project planning, project schedules, project financials, account management, resource management, staff development and client satisfaction.

  • Evaluate project and PMIT performance within the NIA group and perform root cause analysis on non-technical issues and financial under performance. Perform NIA project management lessons learned on when issues are identified. Work with the NIA department manager develop actions plans to prevent reoccurrence of issues.

  • Establish KPI’s for PM’s and PMIT’s and evaluate performance quarterly providing feedback for continuous improvement on a regular basis. Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports and provide supporting information to other manager for evaluations of their staff as required. As required perform more frequent check in’s based on performance.

  • Train and Mentor PMIT’s to become fully functioning PM’s, evaluate PMIT performance and identify targeted training, based on areas of improvement and lessons learned, to support the growth of the individual PMIT’s and the PMIT group collectively.

  • Improve NIA departments performance on overall change management, unbilled work, overruns, and uncollected invoices and support the overall office top ten program.

  • Work with the appropriate personnel on the development, administration, and execution of the NIA Business Plan. Facilitate collaboration with regional offices to coordinate business plans and assist in the pursuit of NIA opportunities.

  • Review NIA proposals, financial deals, and present deal sheets and proposal summaries to management prior to signature. In addition, serve as capture manager for strategic NIA and multi-discipline proposals for multiple clients.

  • Support business plan objectives including use of BMI.

  • Evaluate project teams and work with NIA department manager to build teams, making organizational changes to improve the foundation for future growth in the NIA group and maximize profits.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Serve as a project management advisor to the NEO NIA team providing input on budgets, communication plans internal and external, schedules, staff management, business development, as required.

  • In coordination with T&D GP leadership, evaluate and access internal and external candidates to hire high performing PMIT and Project Management employees. In addition, be responsible for development and retention of staff; mentor staff for growth; train staff through internal and external resources, and guide staff on career development.

  • Work with PMIT’s and project managers to confirm that the planned resources are financially appropriate for assignments as well as verify resources are available to support existing and future projects when being assigned to a project. Support PMIT’s development of NIA resource forecasts and provide strategic input to people managers based on anticipated work.

  • Ensure corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented on all NEO NIA projects.

  • Provide oversight and direction to PM’s and PMITs ensuring they are investing appropriately in their project teams’ personnel to maximize employee-owner career development, satisfaction, and retention.

  • May serve as Account Manager for key clients where required.

  • Will serve as project manager for key projects where required, and where new business is being developed.


Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program. Minimum 7 years related professional experience in T&D design and project management, with a minimum of 5 years of project management experience, with a very strong understanding of NIA design and project management. A understanding of Substation, Transmission, Distribution, Civil, Structural, and CADD design is preferred but not requiried. Ability to handle overall planning for large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment across multiple clients. Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients. Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change. Must possess strong project management skills, understanding of Burns and McDonnell financials, generally accepted accounting principles, technical skills, strong analytical skills and a strategic perspective. Licensed Professional Engineer or Project Management Professional strongly preferred.
