Burns & McDonnell Architecture Department Manager - Global Facilities (Mid-Atlantic Region) in Norfolk, Virginia

This position is responsible for the direction and leadership of the Architecture Department within the Global Facilities Global Practice in the Mid-Atlantic region. Responsibilities include: working with MAR leadership to set the architectural design vision and creative standard with staff, clients and prospective clients, work to manifest this standard in all architectural project work, managerial leadership and direction of Architectural strategic business initiatives, client strategy and development and large team project management. The architecture department provides architectural services for a variety of business lines inclusive of Life Sciences, Industrial, Commercial and Consumer Products.

The Architectural Department Manager will lead the department across multiple geographic locations within the Mid-Atlantic region in a dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service.

Areas of responsibility include general roles supporting the overall Architecture department including the following, with other duties as assigned by senior management:

  • Support or lead department meetings.

  • Coordinate with other Department Managers and the Regional GP Manager.

  • Interpret and establish policies, procedures, and strategic goals of the organization.

  • Support and assist in the development of a Department business plan.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Determine departmental objectives and requirements, organize projects and develop standards and guidelines.

  • Recommend changes in the department and/or the structure and organization to achieve the objectives assigned to them.

  • Market global practice and department capabilities with higher focus on technical development functions and efficiency improvement projects to serve our clients, increase staff skills, and maintain billable goals.

  • Advance and develop Department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.

Areas of direct responsibility/focus for the Architecture Manager include:

  • Provide administrative, supervisory and technical direction for Architecture personnel.

  • Set quality review assignments and perform quality reviews for architectural related projects.

  • Assist with and lead proposal efforts.

  • Establish or review budgets and schedules for architectural related proposals.

  • Monitor progress on projects and provide input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, and quality.

  • Serve as project manager for studies, project development and project definition efforts.

  • Assign work and review staff performance to ensure quality and efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Monitor and maintain development staffing levels, staffing loading, and staffing assignments to meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.

  • Recruitment, development, training and retention of personnel.

  • Supervise workflow development and preparation and maintenance of tools and standards for detailed design

  • Act as a coordinator/liaison with other global practices on activities related to architect project technical development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or related degree from an accredited program. A minimum of 7 years related professional experience and/or project management. 10 years of consulting experience in the A/E industry strongly preferred.

  • Licensed architect strongly preferred.

  • Advanced experience in client and business development.

  • Advanced experience in managing projects, which includes proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.

  • Advanced facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated success as to budget, savings and/or profit margins in completed projects.

  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead and manage.

  • Excellent planning and analytical skills.

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
