Burns & McDonnell Senior Electrical Designer - Industrial Water/Wastewater (Houston or Oklahoma City) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma


We are seeking a Senior Electrical Designer to join our Water Global Practice in our Houston, TX or Oklahoma City, OK regional offices! This role would focus on heavy industrial water and wastewater projects in the oil, gas, and chemical market.

The role would advise the team on efficient ways to design electrical systems within industrial facilities based upon your industry experience. Develop Smart 3D efficiencies and training. Burns & McDonnell is looking for electrical designers who can leverage their experience to find the best solution for dynamic projects. Delegate effectively to assistant designers and provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members.

Duties on projects include:

  • Mentor less experienced assistant- and staff-level designers

  • Develop Smart 3D and PDS efficiencies.

  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients and vendors.

  • Design industrial electrical systems with no supervision

  • CAD 2D and 3D industrial facility construction drawing packages.

  • Manage drawing lists and design team budgets.

  • Specify industrial facility small power equipment.

  • Write constructible scopes of work based on industrial facility site visits.

  • Understanding NEC

Proficient in:

  • AutoCad 2012 & 2014

  • Microstation J and V8I

  • NavisWorks Manage

  • Smart Plant Review

  • Visual

  • PDS 3D

  • SP 3D


When our design-build projects include construction and commissioning, other activities can include:

  • Travel to the project site during construction to answer questions.

  • Full-time field assignments at industrial facilities for construction and commissioning duration

  • Experience in construction and field start up is a plus. Experience with large industrial facility revamp projects with customized scope is a plus. Journeymen and Master Electrician’s licenses are a plus. Being familiar with industry standard codes such as NEC and API is a plus. This position will be accountable for design team schedule and budget and making trips to job sites to survey existing electrical conditions (travel about 15%).


  • Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and thirteen years related experience or associate's degree and fourteen years related experience or fifteen years progressive detailing and design experience.

  • Minimum of fourteen years of experience in the oil & gas industry downstream or water/wastewater projects in the oil and gas market preferred.

  • Previous consulting experience preferred.

  • Candidate must have experience as lead electrical designer on detailed design projects. Must have experience in Class 1 Div 2 Group C, D areas. Must have experience with design activities listed above.

  • Must be willing to travel to the job site and meet with clients and construction personnel to scope the project and answer construction problems. Must have basic knowledge of construction methods such as cable tray installation, cable pulling, cable testing, etc. Refinery, gas processing, or terminal and pipeline experience a plus.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills are preferred.

  • This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments. Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

  • Must be willing and eligible to obtain or currently hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

  • Must be capable of obtaining HASC/OASC basic plus safety training or equivalent and subsequent site safety specific training, as required.
