Burns & McDonnell Transportation Section Manager - Transportation (Omaha) in Omaha, Nebraska

This position is responsible for direction and leadership within the Omaha office of the Transportation Global Practice at Burns & McDonnell, a perennial Fortune 100 company and 100% employee-owned firm. Responsibilities will include working with the Transportation leadership team to set market vision and strategy relative to the Nebraska and Iowa marketplaces. This position will serve as a leader and mentor to staff, enabling them to achieve their professional development goals and utilize an in-house business development team to create sustainable, long-term profitable growth.

Provide input and work with Transportation leadership team to set overall direction of the Transportation Global Practice in Nebraska and Iowa.
Mentor staff to enable the team to work at optimum performance.
Provide direction and lead support for staff to achieve their career goals.
Take a lead role in the development of the 1, 3, and 5-yr Nebraska and Iowa business plan.
Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
Market company to our clients (internal and external) to build backlog and help advance the technical capabilities of the staff.
Set strategic vision of the Omaha office in new transportation business lines that will position the firm with key clients and markets for long-term success.
Advance and develop department workflows to increase efficiency of designs, continuously improve the quality of deliverables, specification development, and project execution.
Coordinate with other section managers across the firm to build strong, cohesive teams to achieve the goals of the organization.
Lead, support, and organize section meetings in Omaha.
Areas of direct responsibility/focus for the Omaha Section Manager include:
Establish an amazing employee-owned culture and team within the framework of the core values of Safety, Success, and Environment.
Provide administrative, supervisory and technical direction for Omaha section personnel.
Set quality review assignments and perform quality reviews for related projects.
Lead and assist with marketing efforts locally and nationally including proposals, client sales calls, and industry networking.
Lead and support local and Nebraska and Iowa recruiting efforts, identifying high-quality candidates to enable growth.
Establish and review budgets and schedules for related proposals.
Provide support and direction on set-up and structure of staffing and execution approach on projects including interface with other disciplines.
Serve as the technical advisor and provide senior-level input and evaluation of project development activities.
Serve as project manager or technical lead, when required.
Coordinate closely with corporate services for billing, accounting, human resources, and corporate marketing to improve the efficiency and local brand of the Omaha section and our company.
Support proposals in evaluating commercial terms and technical requirements related to performance and ways to mitigate company risks.
Assign work and review Omaha section staff performance to ensure quality and efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
Monitor and maintain staffing levels, staffing loading, and staffing assignments to meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.
Recruitment, development, training, and retention of Omaha section personnel.
Act as a coordinator/liaison with other global practices on activities related to project technical development.
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or other engineering discipline from an accredited program.
Minimum five years, 10 years preferred, related professional experience in engineering design (conceptual or detailed) and/or project management with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the Transportation industry.
Experience must include experience related to project scope definition, scoping studies, technical development, and cost estimating of related projects.
Must have a strong understanding of various principles related to the Transportation industry.
Previous management experience is preferable.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.
Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
Must be proficient in the use of basic computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
A professional engineer license is required.
Position requires 5-10% travel.
