Burns & McDonnell Senior Technical Advisory Consultant in Orlando, Florida


  • Responsible for quality review of engineering design and construction documents, commonly used mechanical/electrical concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the mechanical/electrical engineering services industry.

  • Lead the research of project related data as required by the project managers.

  • Lead the engineering, financial, and technical analysis for various engineering projects including power generation, power delivery, and other utilities.

  • Responsible for quality reviews of the detailed financial analysis using a variety of computer-based software.

  • Develop and incorporate technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts.

  • Present technical reports and client presentations summarizing results of analysis.

  • Report financial and economic conditions and subsequent business implications to client projects.

  • Present design review, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design of utility systems for various industries and markets.

  • Build effective relationships with new, potential, and existing clients, customers and contractors.

  • Responsible for ensuring revenue and customer satisfaction goals are met.

  • Manage the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.

  • Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced transmission planning techniques, which are compliant to North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), and/or other industry standards and criteria. Interpret and apply necessary NERC, FERC and regional assessments, following established requirements and standards.

  • Provide guidance to less experienced staff. Develop training on power system and transmission planning assignments.

  • Quality check technical feasibility or soundness of proposed plans utilizing industry accepted techniques.

  • Coach and mentor sales pursuits and proposal development to obtain work.

  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a directly related field plus seven (7) years of utilities planning experience.

  • Must have five (5) years of experience in each of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):

  • Knowledge in standard engineering techniques, principles, and procedures, including necessary NERC, FERC, or regional assessments following established requirements and standards

  • Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) and/or other industry standards and criteria

  • Knowledge of numerous power regions of the country and independent system operators, including any combination of PJM, MISO, NEISO, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, ERCOT, or NYISO

  • Leading risk assessment processes and procedures utilizing standard techniques

  • Leading transmission planning assignments utilizing power system analysis software, including any combination of PowerWorld, PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, or Promod

  • Resolving transmission planning technical issues encountered during projects and presenting solutions to other project team members

  • Leading and executing transmission planning and operational studies projects, including power flow, transient stability, short circuit, reliability, or economic dispatch

Will accept a Master’s degree plus six (6) years of utilities planning experience in lieu of Bachelor’s degree plus seven (7) years of utilities planning experience.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENT : Up to 15% to project sites
