Burns & McDonnell Substation Department Manager in Phoenix, Arizona

Description

This position, located in Phoenix, AZ, is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the Substation Department in Phoenix working directly with the T&D Regional GP Manager. This includes supporting and executing business strategy, developing high performance teams, and promoting the Burns & McDonnell culture, values and mission. The Department Manager will lead the department in a dynamic and profitable manner based on Burns & McDonnell's core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety and overall outstanding service. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by T&D Regional Manager and other senior management:

  • Advocating for safety within the group.

  • Training, developing, mentoring, and career-development of the staff.

  • Recruiting top-talent as well as the engagement and retainage of staff; mentor staff for division growth; train staff through internal and external resources, guide staff on career development.

  • Provide leadership to the team, direct and coordinate work assignments for the Department including making assignments and reviewing performance in order to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff. Supporting overall Regional Office development and resource coordination between GPs.

  • Implement, apply and support company, global practice and/or regional office programs and initiatives; successfully navigating and managing change within the section.

  • Identify project opportunities early and facilitate go/no-go decisions in cooperation with PHX leadership and T&D practice leadership.

  • Collaborate with Substation Department & Section Managers in other Regional Offices and WHQ; represent PHX Office in GP-wide Substation meetings.

  • Interpreting policies, procedures, and goals of organization to staff.

  • May serve as project manager for key technical projects where required, and where new business is being developed.

  • Serve as the technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on substation engineering projects.

  • Advocate for quality and ensure that the corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented, including coordinating with the appropriate teams to assign quality control reviewers.

  • Assisting in the development and execution of the Phoenix T&D Business Plan.

  • Responsible for the attainment of sales, revenue, and net-profit goals for the Department, including meeting billability and utilization goals.

  • Monitor progress on projects and provide input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, and quality.

  • Prepare and present workload and monthly financial reports to global practice or regional management and applicable project managers.

  • Facilitating profitable and sound growth of the Department; achieving stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Responsible for collaborating with business development managers, business line leads, project managers, and proposal production staff on proposals to secure work for staff.

  • Preparing and monitoring the Department budget and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.

  • Supporting Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.

  • Coordinate training needs and requirements with the T&D Regional GP Manager.

  • Advancing and developing Department tools and work flows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.

  • Recommending changes in basic structure and organization of the Department to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to it.

  • Organizing, leading and conducting the annual performance appraisal process for Department staff.

  • Supporting diversity initiatives.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program. Minimum 7 years related professional experience. Technical ability in substation engineering design is required. Requires the ability to collect and analyze information to make decisions. Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment and solve problems; the ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities; the ability to read and apply financial and quantitative analysis; the ability to articulate and comfortable speaking in front of others; the ability to work under stressful situations, have good cognitive skills, maintain work accuracy, and the ability to concentrate on more than one task at a time. Must have the ability to understand and apply written/verbal instructions and the ability to delegate instructions. Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients. Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change. Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective. Position requires 20% travel.
