Burns & McDonnell Portfolio Project Manager Consultant - 1898 & Co. (Multiple Locations) in Portland, Maine


1898 & Co., a part of Burns & McDonnell, seeks an energetic, accomplished hands-on Project Manager to lead successful technology consulting engagements with clients related to portfolio project management. This position will primarily lead the execution of our growing portfolio of work across our customer bases serving as the client’s primary point of contact, ensuring client satisfaction through high-quality delivery. This candidate will be responsible for managing engagement schedules, resources, subcontracts, and budgets to drive profitability and growth based on 1898 & Co. core values of client satisfaction, entrepreneurship, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service.

  • Plan, organize, and direct technology consulting engagements, including the overall negotiation, execution, cost, schedule, and quality of delivery that meets or exceeds client expectations.

  • Develop proposals and review contracts in preparation for legal/risk reviews.

  • Facilitate workshop sessions with client teams to gather and understand client requirements, uncover needs, and develop action plans. Translate business needs and requirements into technology solutions.

  • Leverage strategic thinking to anticipate client problems and work with project team consultants to provide innovative and impactful solutions.

  • Coordinate with clients as the first and primary point of contact for all project-related communications.

  • Coordinate with internal and external subject matter expert for the pursuit and delivery of technology consulting projects.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients to deliver high-quality deliverables and services.

  • Establish project teams, coordinate activities amongst multiple disciplines, and ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of skilled resources.

  • Manage the delivery of third-party vendors and subcontractors, including contracts, scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Provide performance feedback to personnel managers for project team members as appropriate.

  • Identify upselling and cross-selling opportunities.

  • Manage prime contract, subcontractor, and supplier invoicing process.

  • Provide managerial direction and work assignments to project team members.

  • Contribute to the authoring of thought leadership and case studies pertaining to engagements such as blogs, articles, white papers, and conference presentations.

  • Creates, manages, or supports the creation of project deliverables and documentation (project scope, project plans/schedules, project logs, status reports, issues management, change orders, estimates, architecture/design specifications, user guides, training plans, etc.).

  • Mentor high potentials for development in the project manager career path.

  • Track all sales activities in the Customer Relationship Management system

  • Manage and communicate project status, risks, forecasted completion, and financials with all stakeholders.

  • Assure compliance to company policies in all project aspects.


  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, computer science, business, or related field from an accredited curriculum. Graduate degree or MBA preferred.

  • Minimum 7 years of consulting, utility industry, or construction industry product experience with at least 2 years of engagement leadership experience.

  • Consulting experience preferred.

  • Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of consultants and analysts.

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and presentation skills.

  • General business and financial knowledge.

  • Practical project management skills.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Strong preference for experience leading technology-oriented projects.     

Compensation Range


The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Connecticut Public Act 21-30, An Act Concerning the Disclosure of Salary Range for Vacant Positions. The final agreed upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
