Burns & McDonnell Section Manager - Substation (Mid-Atlantic North Offices) in Richmond, Virginia
Description
This position, located in any of the MAR local Virginia offices (Arlington, Roanoke, Richmond, or Chesapeake) is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the Substation Section in the state of VA working directly with the MAR Substation Section Manager – South. The individual will be responsible for the development of staff located in the state of VA with a focus on growing our teams in Arlington, Roanoke, Richmond, or Chesapeake.
Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by T&D Regional Manager and other senior management:
Advocating for safety within the group.
Training, developing, mentoring, and career-development of the staff.
Responsible for the attainment of sales, revenue, and net-profit goals for the Section, including meeting billability and utilization goals.
Facilitating profitable and sound growth of the Section; achieving stated targets and standards for financial performance.
Recruiting top talent as well as the engagement and retainage of staff; mentor staff for division growth; train staff through internal and external resources, guide staff on career development.
Coordinating work for the Section including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff. Supporting overall Regional Office development and resource coordination between GPs.
Identify project opportunities early and facilitate go/no-go decisions in cooperation with MAR leadership and T&D practice leadership.
Work with project managers, and business development managers to identify opportunities and manage team efforts for submittals, proposals, presentations, contract negotiations and related activities.
Collaborate with Substation Department & Section Managers in other Regional Offices and WHQ; represent MAR Office in GP-wide substation meetings.
Interpreting policies, procedures, and goals of organization to staff.
May serve as project manager for key technical projects where required, and where new business is being developed.
Serve as the technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on substation engineering projects.
Advocate for quality and ensure that the corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented, including coordinating with the appropriate teams to assign quality control reviewers.
Assisting in the development and execution of the MAR T&D Business Plan.
Monitor progress on projects and provide input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, and quality.
Preparing and monitoring the section budget and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.
Supporting Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.
Support or lead portions of department meetings; organize and lead section meetings.
Coordinate training needs and requirements with the T&D Regional GP Manager.
Advancing and developing Section tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
Recommending changes in basic structure and organization of the section to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to it.
Organizing, leading, and conducting the annual performance appraisal process for section staff.
Supporting diversity initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited program.
Minimum 5 years related professional experience.
Technical ability in substation engineering design is required.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
Position requires the ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively. Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
Must be licensed as a Professional Engineer or ability to obtain license within a year of starting in the position.
Position requires 35% travel (primarily between offices where the staff is located).
