Burns & McDonnell’s office in Richmond, VA, is actively seeking a Staff Civil Engineer to support and execute civil design projects in support of commercial, industrial and governmental design projects. The Civil Engineer will work on an integrated design team within our Environmental Services Global Practice to perform the following duties:
Complete grading and drainage designs using 3D design tools.
Perform hydrologic/hydraulic calculations using TR55, HY-8, Culvertmaster, HEC programs, PondPack, HydroCAD, etc.
Performing other engineering calculations.
Use Autodesk Civil 3D, perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks, detailed construction drawings, civil site plans using applicable standards and specifications, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.
Write engineering specifications.
Conduct field construction oversight.
Perform shop drawing review.
Assist lead engineers with various and miscellaneous project duties;
Execute a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.
Produce and execute rough sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.
Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule.
Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into civil design and layouts.
Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
Or Bachelor of Science in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering may be substituted for 1-year experience.
3 years of civil engineering experience required. 5 years of consulting preferred.
Successful completion (i.e.passing) FE or EIT preferred.
Strong knowledge of standard civil engineering techniques and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
Strong computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD), and/or hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, civil analysis programs.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
