Burns & McDonnell Structural Section Manager - Aviation & Federal (Multiple Locations) in Roanoke, Virginia
This position is responsible for the direction and leadership of the Aviation & Federal (A&F) Mid-Atlantic Region (MAR) Structural Section within the A&F MAR Global Practice (GP). Areas of responsibility include general roles supporting the overall A&F MAR GP and specific roles relative to the A&F Structural Section including the following, with other duties as assigned by senior management:
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support or lead portions of department meetings; organize and lead section meetings.
Coordinate with the A&F MAR Engineering or GP Manager; other MAR Department / Section managers; and outside-A&F MAR Department / Section Managers.
Interpret and establish policies, procedures, and strategic goals of the section.
Support and assist in the development of a Department and A&F MAR business plan.
Demonstrate creativity, foresight and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
Determine section objectives and requirements, organize projects and develop standards and guidelines.
Recommend changes in the A&F MAR Structural Section and organization to achieve the objectives assigned to them.
Market global practice, Section capabilities with higher focus on technical development functions and efficiency improvement projects to serve our clients, increase staff skills, and maintain billable goals.
Attend project meetings when requested by leadership.
Advance and develop Section tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
Areas of direct responsibility / focus for the A&F MAR Structural Section Manager include:
Provide administrative, supervisory and technical direction for A&F MAR Structural Section personnel.
Set quality review assignments and perform quality reviews for A&F MAR Structural related projects.
Assist with and lead proposal efforts.
Establish or review budgets and schedules for A&F MAR Structural related proposals.
Provide guidance to lead A&F MAR Structural engineers relative to set-up and structure of staffing and execution approach on projects including interface with other disciplines.
Monitor progress on A&F MAR Structural related projects and provide input into areas of concern and direction or redirection to enhance achievement of project schedules, productivity goals, budgets, and quality.
Serve as the technical advisor and provide senior-level input and evaluation of project development activities and design-build bid activities.
Support selection and definition of creative strategies (performance, technical, and commercial) to enhance design-build proposals.
Assign work and review A&F MAR Structural Section staff performance to ensure quality and efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
Monitor and maintain development staffing levels, staffing loading, and staffing assignments to meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.
Recruitment, development, training and retention of A&F MAR Structural Section personnel.
Supervise workflow development and preparation and maintenance of tools and standards for execution of technical development on projects.
Supervise workflow development and preparation and maintenance of tools and standards for detailed design.
Act as a coordinator / liaison with other A&F locations / offices on activities related to A&F MAR Structural project technical development.
Act as a coordinator / liaison with other A&F locations / offices and provide guidance regarding project approach, contacts and consultants, availability of personnel for quality reviews, and other similar activities related to A&F MAR Structural project technical development.
Provide administrative, supervisory and technical direction for Summer Interns assigned to the A&F MAR Structural Section including assignment of work, coordinating site trips, and other associated functions.
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Structural Engineering from an ABET/ETAC accredited program.
Minimum 5 years related professional experience in engineering design (conceptual or detailed) and/or project management with a minimum of 7 years of experience in the Structural industry highly preferred.
Experience must include experience in designing and analyzing various structures in the aviation and/or federal industries.
Must have a strong understanding of structural principles related to the industry.
Previous management experience is preferable.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
Position requires the ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
Must possess understanding of key project management skills/concepts and a strategic perspective.
Must be proficient in the use of basic computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
A professional engineer license is required.
