Description

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead mechanical design project teams to create world-class designs for projects in the Life Science & Technology market. Areas of emphasis include research laboratories, pharmaceutical production facilities, cleanroom manufacturing, agriculture and biotech research facilities in addition to some commercial and non-classified light industrial manufacturing. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting mechanical plans according to client needs, budget constraints and other design factors. A strong understanding of commercial, industrial, and clean environment HVAC systems design coupled with leadership capabilities to support oversight and responsible charge of all aspects of mechanical design while coordinating with all other disciplines is expected.

Job Duties

  • Lead mechanical design of projects from the conceptual phase through project completion for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.

  • Prepare documentation for definition and specification of mechanical equipment as required to support the project: packaged equipment performance specifications and/or data sheets, technical bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations.

  • Review mechanical equipment vendor data; interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers, and designers.

  • Lead the review of and response to construction submittals and field generated RFIs through coordination with the client suppliers and other design disciplines.

  • Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget, staffing planning and construction planning. Responsible for effective management of discipline manhour budgets and communication to project management of change orders.

  • Applies expert knowledge of commonly used mechanical concepts, practices, codes and procedures within the mechanical engineering services industry.

  • Applies knowledge and experience to complex projects in support of creative design solutions.

  • Capable of providing quality reviews of design drawings for a variety of projects and project related data in support of the organization’s Quality Control Program.

  • Quality review the construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of mechanical systems.

  • Leads field inspections, installation punch-lists, measurements and calculations for constructed equipment systems.

  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.

  • Build effective relationships with new and existing clients, internal clients and contractors with focus toward new business opportunities.

  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.

  • Support the development of cost proposals and qualification statements which achieve stated targets and standards for project performance.

  • Provide discipline input into project budgets and cost estimates.

  • Provide mentorship, guidance and instruction to the national network of early career mechanical engineering resources.

  • Network with other national mechanical leads in support of the national Life Sciences business.

  • Responsible for adherence to the Organizational Quality Assurance/Quality Control process for projects that they will lead.

  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.

  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from and ABET-accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering a plus.

  • 7 years mechanical engineering experience, 10 years of experience preferred. EPC project experience preferred.

  • Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred.

  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE). Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.
