Burns & McDonnell Staff Structural Designer – Pipelines (St Louis) in Saint Louis, Missouri

Description

Burns & McDonnell’s office in St. Louis, MO, is looking for a Structural Designer with experience in both AutoCAD and Revit. The role will require the individual to perform various phases of planning, site evaluations, analytical designs, report preparation, specifications, and preparation of proposal and construction documentation and structural plans as part of a project team. This position will work on various projects with a diverse portfolio of project types and clients.

The Structural/Pipeline Designer will work within our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Global Practice to perform the following duties:

  • Perform detailed construction drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures using structural specifications, engineering calculations, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.

  • Produce a full range of drawing production work including foundation plans and details, structural steel plans and details and other necessary construction drawings needed to communicate design intent.

  • Execute designs on a variety of projects pertaining to industrial, manufacturing, and other clients ranging from facility modifications to new facilities.

  • Create, read and interpret existing drawings, other technical drawings (i.e. equipment shop drawings), schematics and computer generated reports.

  • Perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks. Design will be prepared using proper engineering standards and procedures.

  • Provide coordination of project designs with other disciplines.

  • Execute a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

  • Execute rough designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.

  • Interpret and apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

  • Detail structural elements and details with minimal guidance.

  • Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule.

  • Perform material take offs.

  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing assigned tasks in a timely fashion.

  • Inform project lead(s) of any observed inaccuracies in projects, project scopes, and/or project schedules.

  • Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into structural design and layouts.

  • Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or related field and two years related experience or associate's degree and three years related experience or four years progressive detailing and design experience.

  • Advanced understanding of design software such as: Revit and AutoCAD to develop the design deliverables. Knowledge of Navisworks is a plus.

  • Understanding of design software such as: Civil 3D, CADWorx, Plant 3D, MicroStation.

  • Knowledge of piping design systems is a plus.

  • Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Advanced knowledge in the theory and practices of structural discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks. This includes referencing models from other software programs for use in the development of structural deliverables and for use in coordinating and recognizing interferences before drawings are issued.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues, as appropriate, and to accomplish objectives.
