Burns & McDonnell Transmission Planning Consultant (Atlanta) in Atlanta, Georgia

Description

Performs a broad range of studies and other consulting services such as transmission planning and operational studies consisting of power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage analysis, harmonics analysis, electromagnetic, reliability, and economic dispatch associated with congestion management scenarios. Evaluates regulatory conditions and risks by applying NERC, FERC, and regional requirements, policies and procedures, production costing, risk assessment techniques, TPL compliance, and generator interconnection principles. Independently executes transmission system planning studies using industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod. Performs independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard engineering techniques for electric transmission system planning procedures and criteria. Conducts data analysis and interpretation of engineering, financial, and economic conditions and results, and subsequent technical business implications to client projects. Analyzes life-cycle costs by developing and incorporating technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts. Conducts technical and business-related risk assessments that evaluate impacts associated with rules implemented by regulatory agencies. Develops and conducts detailed financial analysis using a variety of computer-based software. Develops technical reports and presentations summarizing results of analysis. Develops client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design/planning of utility systems. Assists project managers in business development activities including proposal development and client relationships. Domestic travel required up to 15% for internal meetings and client sites. Telecommuting is allowed up to 30 days per year. Multiple positions available.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Electrical Engineering or a directly related field from an ABET accredited program plus three (3) years of experience with electric utility operations, planning, consulting, or related experience. Alternatively, the employer will accept a Master’s degree, in Electrical Engineering or a related field, plus two (2) years of experience with electric utility operations, planning, consulting, or related experience, in lieu of Bachelor’s plus three (3) years of described experience.

Two (2) years experience with the following:

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).

  • Power system planning; power system operations; transient stability, short circuit, and voltage analysis; NERC and FERC policies and procedures; production costing; EMS software development; or EMS modeling and studies.

  • Electric transmission system planning processes, power system planning studies, or power system software development and deployment.

  • Any combination of the following: PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, EMS Application(s), or Promod.

  • U.S. Power Regions and Independent system operators (SERC, MISO, NYISO, NEISO, CAISO, or non-ISO region).

Domestic travel required up to 15% for internal meetings and client sites. Telecommuting is allowed up to 30 days per year.
