The Senior Environmental Advisor will lead environmental and siting studies, preparing permitting applications and analysing environmental data for various types of projects, including high-voltage transmission line routing, power generation construction activities and water treatment facilities

  • Provide strategic, corporate, operational and project level advice and support to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and conformance to company environmental and sustainability policies, processes, standards and procedures.

  • Leadership and management teams, project delivery teams, design and engineering teams, corporate team in the USA.

  • Clients, contractors and supply chain, subconsultants, statutory bodies, professional bodies, other interested parties.

  • Conduct business development activities to support the growth of Burns & McDonnel Environmental Services

  • Develop relationships for a potential client base for Environmental Services.

  • Ensure continued compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, company standards and others as applicable.

  • Provide a source of knowledge, advice and support to the business on all matters of environment and sustainability.

  • Work with the Quality & Compliance Manager and SHES Manager to develop, review and ensure implementation of the Environmental Management System including ISO 14001 certification.

  • Advise and support with obtaining environmental licences, permits and consents and monitor compliance on construction projects.

  • Collaborate with our subcontractors and supply chain to deliver best value solutions whilst aligning with our corporate Environmental and Sustainability strategy, goals and objectives.

  • Co-ordinate with the other environmental specialists, sub-contractors and sub-consultants, in fields of hazardous material management and remediation, ecology, archaeology, hydrology, environmental planning and consents, traffic, etc.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, EA, SEPA, Natural England, etc.

  • Undertake environmental advisory visits and assurance activity.

  • Provide guidance on environmental studies/assessments and Risk Assessments and Method Statements to mitigate risks and prevent harm to the environment.

  • Performance reporting, monitoring, collation and analysis of data, providing recommendations for future actions and measures. Investigate Environmental incidents, near misses and other incidents.

  • Prepare and deliver communications, including bulletins, alerts, toolbox talks, briefings and training.

  • Promote good and best practices and techniques, innovations and lessons learnt across the business and more widely.

  • Lead by example, influencing and inspiring our managers, teams, and supply chain to strive for excellence in environmental management and sustainability.

  • Maintain personal development keeping up to date with knowledge and competency levels in relation to environmental management and sustainability.

  • Coach and mentor others working at Burns and McDonnell on environmental management and sustainability.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent in a related discipline of environmental engineering, geology, and natural sciences and 7 years in an environmental position in a high compliance construction industry, preferably with 2 years experience of an environmental position in a power T & D related industry. Required

  • Project experience or working knowledge of the SuRe standard for sustainable and resilient infrastructure (from GIB: Global Infrastructure Basel), PEER (power system performance and electricity infrastructure), RELi (project resilience, including hazard mitigation and adaptation).

  • Working knowledge of or familiarity with BREEAM, LEED, Green Globes.

  • Required to be competent in understanding, assessing and advising on matters concerning noise and noise control in line with legislation and site-specific planning controls.

  • Required to be competent in understanding, assessing and advising on matters concerning contaminated land, remediation and disposal in line with legislation and site-specific planning controls.

  • Required to be competent in understanding, assessing and advising on matters concerning air quality in line with legislation and site-specific planning controls.

  • Required to be competent in understanding, assessing and advising on matters concerning waste management in line with legislation and site-specific planning controls.

  • Experience of preparing briefing materials and training.

  • Experience of EMS and developing policies and procedures.

  • Experience of auditing and inspection.

  • The ability to remain calm and focused when under pressure.

  • Good interpersonal skills, operating with empathy, clear communicator and influencer.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • A passion for environmental protection and making a real difference.

  • A self-starter and finisher. Able to work on own or as part of a team.

  • Computer literate.

  • Familiarity with concepts such as materiality assessment, risk/opportunity matrix, climate risk assessment, resilience, climate adaptation plan, biodiversity, ecosystem services and co-benefits, green (versus grey) infrastructure, low-impact development (LID), onsite wastewater treatment, sustainability action plan, environmentally preferred material, environmental product declaration (EPD), chain-of-custody, by-product synergy, socioeconomic sustainability, circular economy principles in construction, net embodied carbon and energy, lifecycle assessment, triple-bottom-line cost-benefit analysis, carbon and water footprint, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, science based GHG reduction targets, design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA), modern methods of construction (MMC), sustainable construction plan.

  • Active credential and/or recent project experience as a CEEQUAL Assessor or an Envision Sustainability Professional (from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure). Preferred

  • Chartered or working towards chartership of a relevant professional Institution (e.g., CIEEM, CIWEM, IEMA, IES, etc.) Required
