Burns & McDonnell has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Commissioning Engineer with a desire to grow personally and professionally.

As an employee-owner you will work within a multi-discipline team to manage jobsite commissioning activities, client expectations, scopes of work, develop proposals and coordinate resources for your projects. You will interface with owners and facilities managers to develop and implement a commissioning process which will achieve their goals and make them successful. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with backgrounds in facilities, construction, Digital Control Systems, Building Automation Systems, HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Life Safety, Building Enclosure, Security, Communications, or other Specialty Systems.

The Senior Commissioning Engineer will perform the following:

  • Execute commissioning, retro-commissioning, and energy related projects.

  • Plan, schedule, and perform work for projects and programs with support from our national practice.

  • Manage staff and assistant level commissioning team to execute projects. Responsible for the quality control of their deliverables.

  • Manage subcontractors scope of work and quality control.

  • Lead meetings with owner, operation and maintenance, design and construction personnel to understand project goals and schedule to ensure commissioning is properly coordinated.

  • Prepare commissioning plans, specifications and checklist and functional test documentation based on Burns & McDonnell standards.

  • Review design, equipment submittals, operation and maintenance manual, start-up reports, checklists, and training programs.

  • Perform site visits to coordinate commissioning, evaluate new and existing systems, witness equipment start-up and testing.

  • Perform functional testing of highly technical systems. Document commissioning results and performance issues.

  • Collaborate with owner, operation and maintenance, design and construction personnel in recommending remedial measures.

  • Advise Owners in an oversite role, providing effective guidance and technical support.

  • Provide schedule guidance to effectively execute projects.

  • Assist with the development and refinement of methodologies, tools, and standards in support of a growing national and worldwide commissioning practice.

  • Assist with training operation and maintenance personnel to maintain commissioned systems and perform a continuous commissioning program.

  • Ability to travel as needed for project assignments in the Midwest Area. Frequency of travel will vary based on the different project needs.

  • The base work schedule will be a five (5) day work week (Monday through Friday) with some exceptions based on the project location. Periodic weekend work and extended workdays may be required.

  • All other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical, Electrical or Architectural Engineering from an ABET accredited university is required.

  • Mechanical, electrical and/or enclosure commissioning experience is preferred.

  • A minimum of 7 years of direct commissioning or related experience in startups of a variety of facility systems and subsystems including building automation system controls, mechanical, electrical, life safety and building envelope systems.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.

  • Certification in the Commissioning Process or Energy Management is a plus.

  • Experience working on projects that utilize the Unified Facility Guide Specifications, Resident Management System, and Unified Facilities Criteria is a plus.

  • Experience with government contracting is a plus.

  • Experience working both as both a commissioning agent and commissioning oversite role is a plus.

  • Strong facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Highly effective communicator with clear and concise writing and presentation skills.

  • High level of attention to detail.

  • Understanding of site safety procedures, including electrical safety.

  • Experience with different types of stand-alone monitoring equipment including flow meters, temperature loggers, electrical meters, and others a plus.

  • Experience with any of the following: combined heat and power/cogeneration, central utility plants, data centers, healthcare facilities, laboratories, water/wastewater facilities, building automation system controls, building envelope, test & balance, NETA electrical testing, renewable energy and other specialties a plus.

  • Successful completion of OSHA 30-hour Safety Training Course is required within the first 3 months.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Department of Defense security clearance is a plus.
